Original Line-up: Tony Williams - Lead / Zola Taylor (joined in 1955) / David Lynch / Alex Hodge (replaced by Paul Robi in 1955) / Herb Reed+++ Later to become the most popular vocal group of the 50s, The Platters were originally formed in 1953 in Los Angeles, California +++ Recorded unsuccessfully for FEDERAL records +++ In 1955 15-year-old Zola Taylor joined the group, suggested by Songwriter Buck Ram +++ A first Recording of "Only You", written by Buck Ram, in 1955 had only very little success +++ New recording contract with MERCURY records, as part of a package-deal envolving The Penguins +++ Rerecording and rerelease of "Only You", now on MERCURY, gave them their first US hit +++ "The Great Pretender", again written by Buck Ram, followed, which later showed to be their biggest all-time success +++ Lead singer Tony Williams was replaced in 1960 by Sonny Turner +++ Group had dozens of major hits, including "The Magic Touch", "Twilight Time", "Smoke gets in your eyes" and many more +++ |
