The Who

Line-up: Roger Daltrey - vocals / Pete Townshend - guitar / John Entwistle - bass / Keith Moon - drums (later replaced by Kenny Jones)


+++ Started out as the Detours in Shepherds Bush, near London +++ Renamed to the High Numbers, they made first recordings for FONTANA records in 1964 and appeared at London mod clubs, such as the Marquee +++ Their first recording as the Who, "I can't explain" was released on the BRUNSWICK label in early 1965 +++ TV shows, such as "Ready, Steady, Go!" followed +++ Subsequent hits included, "My generation", "I'm a boy" and "Pictures of Lily" +++ In 1968, the Who released the Pete Townshend masterpiece, the rock opera "Tommy", performed in opera houses all over the World and later (1975) transformed into a major movie, starring the Who, Elton John, Tina Turner and others +++ Further hits included "Pinball wizard" (from Tommy), "We won't get fooled again" and "Join together" +++ Keith Moon died in September 1978 (at the age of 32) of an overdosis of prescription tranquilizers +++ Kenny Jones (ex Small Faces) replaced Keith Moon on drums +++ The band continued to tour a lot, but their individual members later pursued more and more solo projects +++
