Johnny Preston

Born: August 18, 1939 Port Arthur, Texas

+++ Formed his own group, The Shades, still in High School +++ Met DJ Jape Richardson, better known as The Big Bopper, in 1959, who signed him to the MERCURY label +++ In early 1959, the Big Bopper also wrote his biggest hit, "Running Bear", both no. 1 in the US as well as Britain, and even sang the background indian chant "oom-pah-pah, oom-pah-pah" (unfortunately The Big Bopper did not live to see the success of his work) +++ Further hits included "Cradle of love" and "Leave my kitten alone", among others, until late 1961 +++ From 1962 on, however, Johnny Preston faded into obscurity and has not been heard of since +++
