SURE CONVICTION - GET READY
This is a band that for me has been one of the few examples of really great rock and roll in the mid to late 90's. Sadly, this band has not recieved the attention they deserve, and far to many people still don't know who they are. I hope to see that change because they just keep putting out great music. This album was released in 1995, but they have a newer album called "54 and Change" which I will be reviewing at a later date and as I understand they are currently working on another new album. They also have their first album called "Fightin' The Battle" which I have only heard a few clips from, but they also sounded great. I have ordered that album, and once I get it, and have had the chance to develope my thoughts on it, I'll review it too.
Now down to business. For me the best way I can think to describe the sound of this album is something of a cross between the DANIEL BAND and REO SPEEDWAGON. Those were both bands with really great sounds, and that's what we have here is a really great sound. Songs like Get Ready, Axe To My Tree and several others show off just how well this band can rock. Then you have songs like Standing For You and One Person or Two that show us a softer side of this band. These ballads are not cheesy either, they are done very well with valuable messages. In fact all the songs have really good messages in them. These guys are not shy about their intent to spread the message of Christ, which makes them useful as well as talented. This group is headed by brothers Matt and Paul Liffengren. On this album, Matt wrote the lyrics while Paul wrote most of the music. Both of them show a great deal of proficiency at their respective jobs, a blessing from the Lord to be sure. Lead vocals on this album were handle by Jeff Gunn who has just a touch of rasp in his voise which works nicely on the rockier tunes, yet on the ballads he is able to keep his voice sounding pretty much clear which works well with those songs too. All in all, I highly recommend this album for anyone who has loved, and has missed the great rock and roll sounds of the 80's and early 90's. The album was originally released on Giant Records but at this point I think your best to get one would be to visit Sure Conviction at their website. You can find it by clicking here.
