Absolut History.

The breakthrough came when a bottle was finally chosen. Like many breakthroughs it came purely by chance and in retrospect seems almost too obvious.

Advertising man Gunnar Broman was looking through an antique shop window in Stockholm's "Old Town" when he saw an old Swedish medicine bottle, a cultural icon was unchanged for more than a hundred years. The bottle was elegant, different, simple and very Swedish. In the 16th and 17th centuries vodka had been sold in pharmacies as medicine to cure everything from colic to the plague.

The choice was a stroke of genius. Several Swedish designers were given the job of helping the Absolut Vodka team further develop the bottle.

The Absolut Vodka bottle is made from low iron content sand for maximum clarity to show off its crystal clear contents. Most of the world supply of Absolut Vodka bottles is made nearby at the Limmared factory.

It had been decided that there should be no label to hide the crystal clear contents. After much discussion and several prototypes the team came to the conclusion that some kind of colored lettering was required. Blue was decided upon as a the most visible and attractive color. The color that is still used today for the famous Absolut Vodka logo.

Absolut Cap.

From the beginning Göran Broman and his partners wanted to use a cork on the top of the bottle but Lars Börje Carlsson replaced it with a metallic colored cap.

Absolut Seal.

The seal on the Absolut bottle's shoulder first came as a joke. One of Gunnar Broman's employees put one of his small medallions there. The Americans saw it when they visited Broman's agency and they loved it. But what should they put there instead of the medallion? Sketches were made of lions, goddesses, swords, shields, men's heads etc. Then one thought of L.O. Smith, the Absolut inventor...Weird enough, Broman's office was located in L.O. Smith's old house. A dozen of different seal-versions were made and the decision fell on the one that has been used ever since.

Absolut Text.

The text is written by hand. The man who wrote Gunnar Broman's text down was called Kotte Jönsson. First he drew the letter with a sharp pen on a hard paper. Then he did some corrections and took xerox-copy after xerox-copy to make it look more handmade. But the text has been changed as everything else. In the beginning the text said: "This superb vodka is made from the grains grown in the rich fields of southern Sweden. Distilled at the famous old distilleries near Åhus. It has been purified 10 times in accordance with traditions dating to the year 1498. In perfecting Sweden's national refreshment, it has become better known by the name Absolut rent Brännvin, Absolut Vodka."
