okay, this section is not what it once was. but GSU football is still great (sort of). well, at different times (85-86, 89-90, 99-00) it was awesome. national championships (I-AA).

so, the classic poem:

'Twas the day of the Championship and all through the land,
The only creatures stirring were Georgia Southern fans.
The banners were hung by the flag pole with care,
In hope that a fifth banner would soon be there.

Driving to Chattanooga, avoiding the Feds,
While visions of Championships danced in our heads.
And mamma with her bourbon and I with my beer,
Had just settled down for some Championship cheer.

When out on the field there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my seat to see what was the matter.
I discarded my hot dog and tore off my cap,
I grabbed my binoculars from out of my lap.

The sun shone the luster of the endzone,
And I knew in this excitement, That I was not alone.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Paul Johnson and the Eagles again this year.

With a nimble quaterback with the ability to thrill,
I knew in a moment it must be Greg Hill.
As rapid as Eagles Johnson's players they came,
And he whistled, and shouted and called them by name.

"Now Peterson, now Freeman, now Johnson and Cunningham,
On Hadden, on Allen, on Moreland, and Parham.
To the endzone, to the endzone, to the endzone all day,
Now watch as we dominate every play.

As Eagles so graceful, down the field they fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, they never say die.
So over the Penguins the Eagles they flew,
With Adrian, and Greg and LaRocco too.

And then in a twinkling, the two teams meet,
As I hear the stomping and romping of each little cleat.
As I stood to cheer and High Five my bud,
The coin toss landed on the field with a thud.

They were dressed in all white, from head to toe,
And they yelled and they jumped as they faced their foe.
With 22 men the game began,
And fans looked on as Adrian ran.

His speed was unequalled, and he racked up the yards,
GSU fans knew a win was in the cards.
The defense tackled and the offense blocked,
Eagle fans watched as the Penguins got clocked.

With mighty strength Voncellies anchored the line
As Josh, Arkee, and Jason made the Penguins whine.
The confidence grew as the game wore on,
We knew in a moment that GSU would have this game won.

The offensive line continued their push,
And we watched all the Penguins fall on their tush.
GSU was winning so the scoreboard said,
I realized now, I had nothing to dread.

In the grand tradition set up by Erk,
Coach Johnson and the Eagles continued to work.
As the game came to a close everyone knew,
A fifth Championship was realized for GSU.

At the end of the day the game had been won,
Away everyone went after having sone fun.
And I heard Johnson Exclaim as the team drove out of sight,
"Happy Championship to all, it was a good fight!"
