Chapter 30: Phone Calls & Family Reunions

The boys trudged into the hotel room, all exhausted. The other guests for Letterman hadn't been able to get there for the taping, so Hanson was the only guest. They played five songs, had an interview, and had an autograph session. Then, as they were leaving, the crew of Access Hollywood asked them for an interview. They agreed, and were taken to the Access Hollywood studios. The interview lasted half an hour, and they were asked to play. They did. Now they were just plain tired. They were all complaining.

"Mom. What are we doing tomorrow?" asked Zac, flopping onto the couch.
"Well, we were going to do an interview for Access Hollywood. But since they decided to catch you for that today, we aren't doing anything tomorrow or the next day. We're leaving for home in 3 days."
"If we aren't doing anything anyways, can we just go home early?" asked Isaac.
"I suppose we could, if you boys really wanted to."
"We do. Trust me." stated Zac.

Diana looked to each of the boys. They all nodded.

"Well, ok. I'll go talk to your father about getting us on an earlier flight."
"Thanks mom!" chorused the boys.
"You're welcome boys."

She walked out of the room, in search of Walker. The boys began to talk.

"I cant wait to go home!" exclaimed Zac.
"Dude, I know what you mean! I'm so tired!" added Isaac, stretching.
"I want to sleep in my own bed. And see my friends, and play paint ball, and just relax!" said Zac
"My own bed sounds so good right now." Taylor agreed.

Isaac and Zac nodded. The three laid around for about ten minutes later, and split up into their rooms to relax more. Taylor walked into his room and jumped onto the bed. Thinking for a minute, he picked up the phone. He dialed August's number, praying that she was home, and that she would talk to him.

***In Tulsa***

The three girls were deep in conversation when the phone rang. Laughing, August picked up the portable phone.

"Hello?" she answered

Taylor paused.

"Hello?" she asked again.

He took a deep breath.

"Hi." he said.

August's smile vanished. Lindsay and Ellie both stopped laughing and watched her. She sighed.

"Hi."
"Are you going to hang up on me, or will you talk."
"No. I'll talk. I owe you that much."
"Thank you."
"So, talk."
"Ok. I just want to apologize. For everything. I shouldn't have done anything like that. I was being a selfish jerk, and you were right about my ego. I just didn't want to realize it. I'm so sorry. I love you. Please forgive me."

August looked to Lindsay, and covered the mouthpiece. August was about to cry.

"Is it who I think it is?" asked Lindsay.

August nodded. She burst into tears and dropped the phone. Lindsay grabbed the phone, and Ellie rushed to August.

"Tay?"
"Lindsay?"
"Yea."
"Whats going on?"
"Tay, she's doesn't want to talk. She'll see you when you come home, alright?"
"Ok. I guess."
"Bye Tay."
"Bye."

Lindsay hung up the phone. She walked over to August and hugged her. She tried to comfort herm but she couldn't. August was too upset. She was confused more than anything. She wanted to forgive Taylor, but she was afraid that all this would happen again. She didn't want it to happen again. The phone rang again. Lindsay went to answer it.

"Hello?"
"Is this August?" asked the caller.
"No, its not."
"Well, can I like, talk to her?"
"Let me see."

Lindsay turned back to August.

"Hey Aug? There's someone on the phone for you, I don't know who it is. Can you talk?"

August nodded. Lindsay handed her the phone. August took a deep breath.

"Hello? This is August."
"August. Glad to see that you stopped crying long enough to talk to me." taunted the caller.

August sighed.

"What do you want Kel?"
"Oh nothing, just you to leave my man alone."
"God Kel, he's not your man, get over yourself."
"Oh, he is, and I'll prove it when they come home."
"Yea Kel, you do that."

August hung up the phone disgusted.

"Who was that?" asked Lindsay.
"That. That was Kel." as she said Kel, August made herself sound like a cheerleader.
"Oh, Kel as in Kel Michaelson?"
"Maybe. I don't know her last name. She just called to tell me to stay away from ‘her man'"

Lindsay shook her head.

"She goes to my school, which, by the way, starts in 2 weeks."
"Oh, don't remind me!" moaned Ellie.
"I hate being the new kid. But its better at the start of the year than the middle, I guess." added August.
"Anyways, about Kel. She's had her eye on Tay for a long time. They were real close before you came, and she claimed that he was going to ask her out. It never happened. I used to be friends with her. It wasn't a fun experience."

August laughed, yet looked worried.

"But don't worry about her. She won't get him."
"I hope not."

**In New York**

Taylor stormed out of his room and stomped into the kitchen, where Isaac was standing infront of the refrigerator.

"Whoa Tay, whats wrong with you?"
"Nothing. Everything! August won't talk to me. I just called and apologized, and she stopped talking and Lindsay told me that she wouldn't talk right now. Why am I wasting my time?"
"I dunno Tay, are you?"
"Yes, I am wasting my time!! If she won't talk to me, whats the point in me talking to her?"

Isaac shrugged and walked out of the room. Taylor sat down to think. He didn't know what to do. He wanted August back, but he didn't know how to do that.

**In Tulsa**

August sat quietly for about ten minutes, just thinking. Ellie and Lindsay had left previously, a few minute after Kel had called. August looked at the clock. 6 pm. She wondered where her dad was. Then she remembered that she was supposed to have called her aunt about the babies. She walked over to the phone and looked up her aunt's number. It rang twice. Her aunt picked up.

"Hello?"
"Aunt Alex?"
"Yes?"
"Its August."
"August! Honey! How are you? I haven't seen you forever!"
"I'm good, yourself?"
"I'm very well. How are your parents?"
"They're good, thanks."
"Are they around?"
"No. Nobody's home."
"Oh Honey, have you eaten yet?"
"No."
"Well, would you like to come and eat with us?"
"Sure! But I don't know where your house is."
"Ok. You're in Tulsa right now, aren't you?"
"Yea."
"Ok, then I can give you directions."
"Ok."

Alex gave August specific directions to her house, and August wrote them down. She told Alex that she would be over in about ten minutes. They hung up, and August found some paper. She wrote her dad a note and grabbed her keys, and left. The drive was about 5 minutes long. August couldn't wait to see her aunt. She found the house, and checked the address. She hadn't seen her aunt for about 6 years. The last time was when her aunt came to visit in Rockford. She parked in the driveway and stepped out of the car. She slowly walked dup to the door, and rang the bell. A boy that looked to be about 16 opened the door. He smiled.

"Can I help you?" he asked.
"Yea, I think. Does Alex Johnson live here?"
"Yea, come in, I'll get her."

August stepped in and stood near the door. The boy walked into the kitchen to get his mom. She appeared quickly. She smiled, and pulled August into a hug.

"August! You've grown so much!"
"I know. You haven't seen me in about 6 years remember!"
"Yes I know! You've grown into a beautiful young lady!"
"Thank you."

August smiled.

"Come on in honey. Dinner's about ready."
"Ok."

August followed Alex into the kitchen. The boy that answered the door was watching TV, and another girl that looked about 14 was helping set the table. Alex called the boy, apparently named Chris, into the kitchen. August vaguely remembered her cousins.

"Everyone, I hope you all remember August, Jim's daughter. They moved down here recently. August, if you don't remember, this your uncle Mike and your cousins Chris and Amy. They're both around your age. Amy's 15, and Chris is 16, he'll be 17 next month"

Everyone nodded and said their hellos. Chris spoke up.

"Sorry about earlier. I didn't recognize you!"
"Don't worry about it. I didn't recognize anyone really."

They all laughed, and sat down to eat.

"So August, how are your parents?"
"They're good. That's what I called about. My mom had her baby this morning!" August smiled.

Kim's face lit up. Her smile widened.

"Oh! A girl or a boy?"
"Well. Two girls." August smiled, even wider.
"Two?! She had twins?!"

August nodded enthusiastically.

"My my! They didn't tell me that!" exclaimed Alex.
"Me either! They wanted to surprise me."
"What are their names?"
"Noelle Lynn and Samantha Christine."
"Those are beautiful names!"
"I know."
"Wow. Give your parents my congratulations!"
"I will."
"Wow. Twins. Well August, how have you been?"
"I've been pretty good. I actually came down here about 2 months before my parents. They wanted me down here to get to know some people."
"Who did you stay with?"
"Um, some of my parents' friends. The Hansons."
"Ah yes, the Hansons. Very nice family. Now, the three oldest boys, they sing, don't they?"
"Yea. I got to travel with them, which was really fun."
"Sounds like it. Now, how is your friend doing? Julie I think her name was. I haven't seen her for a long time either."

August looked down at her plate.

"Well. Um, Julie isn't around anymore. She...she died in a plane crash on her way home from visiting. About three months ago."

Kim put her hand on August's.

"Oh honey, I'm sorry. I had no idea."
"Its ok. Its not your fault."

August gave a weak smile, and they continued with dinner.
