Chapter 35: Diana

Chris shook his head. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. He looked at his cousin, she was obviously not believing this either. He ran his hand through his hair.

"Aug, it'll be alright, I promise."

August looked up and nodded.

"You're probably right" she sniffed. She took a deep breath.

"I just can't believe that they would think that! Thats what bugs me most!" she exclaimed.
"Yea, I know."

She sighed. Chris quickly glanced his watch and looked up.

"Hey Aug, sorry to do this right now, but we've gotta get home. Mom wants us to help her do some stuff."
"Oh, thats ok, don't worry about it." mumbled August.
"You gonna be alright?"

August nodded.

"Ok. Come on Amy."
"Yea, I'm comin."

Chris rolled his eyes and headed out. Amy smiled sympathetically at August.

"I hope everything works out."
"Me too."
"Well, bye August, Lindsay. Ellie, it was nice meeting you."

Ellie smiled.

"Yea, you too."

Amy smiled and walked after Chris. She shut the door behind her. Soon, Chris started the car, and pulled away. The sound of the engine faded, and everything was silent.

"So, what do you want to do?" asked Lindsay, breaking the silence.

August shrugged.

"Well, I want to go see my mom and tell her what happened for one."
"Ok, we can do that if you really want to."
"You won't mind?"

Ellie and Lindsay shook their heads.

"Ok, hold on."

August walked over to the phone and quickly dialed her dad's phone.

"Hello?" he answered.
"Dad?"
"Hey honey, whats up?"
"Not much, we wanted to go down to see mom, can you take us?"
"Oh man.....I can't honey, I'm in the middle of something really big."
"Oh. Ok, thats alright."
"Maybe Alex can take you?"
"Chris and Amy just left, to go help her with some stuff."
"Ok, well, hey, have the Hansons gotten back yet?"

August sighed.

"Yea, they got back earlier today."
"Ok, maybe Mrs. Hanson would take you."
"I could ask."
"Ok, well, I really have to go. I'll see you when I get home."
"Ok, bye"

August hung up the phone and looked to Lindsay.

"My dad can't bring us."
"Well, that sucks!"
"Yea I know. But get this."
"What?"
"He said that I could ask Mrs. Hanson to take us."

Lindsay sighed.

"Well, we could. We have nothing against Mrs. Hanson. Just the guys." she said

August nodded.

"I guess you're right."
"I know." smiled Lindsay.

August and Ellie laughed.

"So you gonna call or not?" asked Ellie.
"Yea, hold on."

August picked up the phone and dialed the Hansons' number, hoping that one of the boys wouldn't pick up. To her dismay, Zac picked up. She quickly hung up the phone. Lindsay and Ellie each gave her questioning glances.

"Um, Zac picked up the phone." she answered.
"Ok, so you going to call back or leave it at that?"
"I don't know."
"Do you want me to ask for Mrs. Hanson and give you the phone?" suggested Lindsay.

August's face lit up.

"Yes! Could you do that???"

Lindsay nodded and August handed her the phone. August dialed the number. It rang. Again, Zac picked up.

"Hello?"
"Hello, can I speak to your mom please?"
"Yea, just a second."
"Ok."

As Zac went in search of his mother, Lindsay handed August the phone. August took a deep breath and waited. After about 2 minutes of silence, August heard Mrs. Hanson's perky voice answer.

"Hello?"
"Hi Diana, its August."
"Hi honey! I haven't seen you for awhile! How are you?"
"I'm very good, yourself?"
"Well, I'm doing very well. We just got home this morning."
"Yes, I saw. The guys were over here for a little bit."
"Oh really? I don't remember them leaving!" she laughed. "I don't even keep track of them much anymore!"

August laughed.

"So how are your parents dear?"
"Oh, they're fine. My dad really likes his new job."
"And your mother?"
"She's doing very well. She had her baby a few days ago."
"Really! Congratulations!!"
"Thanks."
"So is she home yet?"
"No, she comes home tomorrow."
"Good for her. I'll have to go down and see her soon."
"Thats what I was going to ask. See, we wanted to go down and see her, but we have no way of getting down there. So I wanted to know if you could possibly drive us down there?" August asked, her fingers crossed.
"Sure I can! I'd be happy to!"
"Really?! Thanks!"
"Hey, don't worry about it. If you ever need a ride anywhere, I'd be happy to take you."
"Thank you!"
"Its my pleasure. How bout I pick you up in about 20 minutes, how does that sound?"
"Thats great!!"
"Ok, see you then!"
"Ok, bye!"
"Bye."

August hung up and smiled.

"Ok, she's gonna pick us up in like 20 minutes."
"Cool!!" replied Lindsay.
"Oh my gosh!!!" exclaimed Ellie.
"What?" asked Lindsay and August simultaneously.
"I'm going to be in the same car as Hanson's mom!!" she squealed, jumping around the room.

August laughed and shook her head. She glanced at the clock. It was 3:00. All of the sudden, her stomach growled. She looked to Lindsay and Ellie.

"You guys hungry?" she asked.

They nodded. August walked into the kitchen, Lindsay and Ellie behind her. She opened the fridge. She grabbed some jelly. Then she walked to the pantry and grabbed some peanut butter and chips. She grabbed the bread loaf off of the counter and set all of the materials on the table. Each girl grabbed some bread and they all made sandwiches. Once finished making them, they sat around the now clear table and enjoyed their late lunches. After they were done, they cleaned up the kitchen and landed on the couch. August flipped on the TV. Nothing was on the normal channels, so she changed it to MTV. It was Road Rules. The girls sat and watched the show until the doorbell rang. August turned off the TV and ran to the door. Diana smiled when she opened the door.

"Hi!" she smiled.
"Hi!" replied August. "Come in!"

Diana stepped through the door and looked around.

"This is a beautiful house!"
"Yea, I like it!"

Diana looked to Lindsay and Ellie.

"Hello Lindsay. I haven't seen you for awhile."
"Hi Mrs. Hanson!" she smiled.
"Oh," exclaimed Diana. "Call me Diana! You make me feel old when you call me Mrs. Hanson!" she laughed.

Lindsay nodded. Diana looked to Ellie.

"Hello dear, whats your name?"

Ellie cleared her throat.

"I'm Ellie." she smiled.
"Hello Ellie, nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too!"

Diana smiled.

"Well, shall we go?" she asked the girls.
"Yea, lets go!" replied August.

The 4 filed out of the house and August locked the door behind her. They piled into Diana's car and drove off.
