RATTLE AND HUM (1988)

The critics were not kind towards this album and they practically slaughtered the concert movie, accusing U2 of being egotistical and trying to put themselves up there with the Beatles, Dylan etc. But what do those asswipes know anyway? With music like this U2 are in a class of their own.

Rattle and Hum (a line from 'Bullet The Blue Sky'), is U2's tribute to rock legends [e.gs 'God Part II'- an attack on John Lennon's biographer, 'Angel of Harlem' - for Billie Halliday (a classic song!)] as well as having a chance to play with their heroes ['When Love Comes To Town' - with B.B. King, 'Love Rescue Me' - with Bob Dylan]. It also proved that U2 could get away with just 'three chords and the truth' and come up with great songs.

On 'Desire', Bono sings 'a preacher stealing hearts in a travelling show, for love or money?', voicing his discomfort towards tele-evangelists who go around conning people by using religion as a tool... a sign that U2's passion is still there. Edge playing the blues, Adam and Larry delivering good work... Bono writing and singing about his beliefs... what more could a U2 fan ask for?

My Fave Tracks: Desire, Angel Of Harlem, All I Want Is You, When Love Comes To Town, God Part II, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

Rattle and Hum is the rock album that U2 would listen to themselves. It's got Rock, Gospel, Soul, Metal, and maybe a bit of country (ugh). It`s a classic rock and roll album once you strip away all the hype from the media ,who expected it to be THE album of the 80`s.

There is a big theme of love in the songs, which is par for them. But the political messages are still plentiful. It is my favorite U2 album personally. It`s got that bare-boned rock and roll swagger that can`t be resisted.
