Welcome to Gavin's guide to

BOB'S Souvenir Bunker

Hi, I'm Crazy Bob

as found on the Williams pinball machine

please note: this page is not affiliated with Williams Electronic Games, WMS or any Bally/Midway company. I cannot guarantee the acuracy of information included here, so if I'm wrong, don't hold it against me... Anyways, this is information I gathered and/or theorized about Bob's Souvenir Bunker, from the Williams pinball game Red & Ted's Roadshow. Although not discrediting game designer Pat Lawlor's other work, this is by far my favorite Lawlor pin.

The Story:

Somewhere between stretching the truth about fish and selling hot dogs at NBA games, the character Bob has had several appearences in various Williams/Bally pinball machines. Whether or not it's the same Bob, the truth is kept hidden in a shroud of secrecy heavily guarded by a Williams Ninja strike force team. Slowly, Bob became crazy as time went on. I fugured it had to do with selling novelty souvenirs all across the continental United States, but programmer Dwight Sullivan told me it was "From all those meddling kids messing around in his Junkyard".
Nonetheless, in 1994 Bob opened up a chain of Souvenir Bunker stores between such US cities as New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Dallas, Los Angeles, and others. As Red and Ted, the "Road Crew from Hell" takes to the highways in their runaway bulldozer, they manage to find the time to stop every now and then at Bob's Souvenir Bunker.

As with all Williams/Bally pinball machines, game features may be set differently from game to game, and the game's software revision may differ from one machine to another. Most games in operation are set to "Factory Settings" so the information found here will coinside with most games. This page was composed with information obtained from a Road Show set to factory settings, with software code LX-5.

Game Play:

If you've played Road Show before, chances are you have visited Bob's Souvenir Bunker. This feature is located in the top left of the playfield, on the left side of the ramp, just above the top flipper. A spinner target is located in front of the bunker, so a ball must pass through the spinner target to get to Bob's.
At the beginning of game play Bob's Bunker is lit. Shoot Bob's Bunker to stop in. When inside, the game will pick an item at random. After the item is selected you have the option to either buy the item for the listed price by pushing the left flipper button, or passing on the item by pushing the right flipper button. After you decide on whether or not to purchase this item, the ball will return to the playfield. After visiting Bob's Bunker, it must be relit to be awarded again. To relight Bob's Bunker, the ball must pass through either the "Lite Bob's" lane located between Red and Ted's heads or through the far right return lane on the right side of the slingshot.
Bob's Bunker is NOT available when a City Scene is active, when the lock is lit, during Multiball, Super Pay Day, Secret Mania, Bad Weather, or Spin Wheel feature is active.

Slogans:

With every visit to Bob's Bunker, a display graphic is shown of Red and Ted'd bulldozer parking in front of Bob's Souvenir Bunker. On the outside of Bob's building, there is a message board. On the first visit of every game the message is the same. Every following visit, the message changes at random. Although most mesages are just humorous, a few have a special significance.

Items for sale:

There are approximately 30 different items available for sale at Bob's. Each item has its own cost (deducted from your score), and some items award bonuses. Each city on the map has a specific item that will award an additional 10,000,000 points when the end of ball bonus is collected if an item corresponding to a city mode completed is in your possession. The pinballs for sale award game features.
Duplicate items can be purchased, and items can also be awarded to you free of cost by either successfully making the plunger skill shot, or being awarded "Bob's Freebie" from the Spin The Wheel feature.
If your path of travel to the west coast involves the city scene for Albuqureque, this city's mode is the trading post. In this mode you are given the option to sell your items to the Native American sales clerk for an undisclosed amount. Chosing YES causes the clerk to smile, and displays the buyback multiplyer, which ranges from 1/2x to 5x original item value (for all items), chosen at random by the game. For dupliate items, bonuses will be multiplied by the number of duplicate items in your possession, along with their value. After selling back your items, any city/item bonuses are no longer collected at the end of ball bonus, unless if you acquire them again. Chosing NO ends the mode, awarding 5,000,000 and all items remain in your possession. Pinballs purchased from Bob can NOT be traded in since they are feature awards.

Items not for sale:

Just like the Snack Bar on the Creature From The Black Lagoon pin, several items are listed from which the game picks one at random, but a few are never picked (or at least never picked when I play). Why? just more of that subtle subliminal humor that the programmers add to make the game that much more fun. Items I've seen listed include:
Wooden Indian, A New Car, DOHO, and probably lots more I haven't caught yet.
