Here's a little background info:
Godsmack formed several years ago after the lead singer, Sully Erna, had finished a drumming gig with another band. This was Sully's first singing job. In 1996, the band, comprised of "Sully", "Tony", "Robbie", and "Joe", recorded a record on the indie label, EK Records, for a couple thousand dollars which they borrowed from a friend. After recording this they pedaled it off to Newbuy Comics, the only store to agree to sell it. A dj called Rocko at WAAF heard their song "Keep Away" and started playing it on his nightly show. Around this time, Joe left the band and the old drummer, Tommy rejoined. After playing a string of WAAF sponsored events, (as well as many other shows) Godsmack ended up selling over 25,000 copies of their cd in the greater Boston area. Their popularity grew and grew, and eventually started attracting some major label attention. They eventually signed to Republic Records and rereleased their cd nationally.

No, they are not named after the Alice In Chains song.
