Forbidden Planet

HISTORY OF FORBIDDEN PLANET

Forbidden Planet's history began in the fall of 1994. The band (originally called Beauty Queen Killers) formed through an ad in the Washington DC City Paper. The members all shared a dissatisfaction for the current music on the radio and also felt that there were very few bands that put on a good live show. Blending each member's influences (Stones, Troggs, Kinks, Sweet, New York Dolls, T. Rex, Stooges), the Beauty Queen Killers developed a raw sound that combines fuzzy guitars, catchy hooks and bubblegum melodies. Their live shows are fast paced and loud.

After losing a bet, the band's name was switched to Forbidden Planet. Their self-titled debut CD was released on September 2, 1997 on their own label, Vixen Records. This 14-song recording contains newly-recorded versions of seven songs which were released on the cassette-only, Beauty Queen Killers, as well as seven new songs. "Summertime" and "Carousel" are the two singles.

Forbidden Planet plays primarily in and around Washington DC, with the 9:30 Club, Black Cat and Phantasmagoria being the most prominent clubs they play. Forbidden Planet has also played in New York City (CBGB's, Continental, Webster Hall, Pyramid), Baltimore and Richmond, and are planning a US tour to support their CD.

The line-up consists of Dan Bader, Steve "Stikky" Burcky, Jim Driggers, Dave Mann and Matt Blackburn. All have previous music experience. Dan (vocals, mayhem) previously was in Date Bait. Known then as "Gutter Boy", Dan played with Date Bait up and down the East Coast and released numerous singles. Stikky (drums, hair) has played for Junkie Gypsy and Dead End. Jim (guitar, beer) played for the Canardly Playboys. Dave (Vox guitars) plays in the demented pop group, The Now. Matt (bass, cigarettes) previously worked on independent projects.
