Trish Kane
Potter/Artist

Trish Kane has been potting since 1982 and has recently developed a long-standing interest in painting into a more serious pursuit. She works from her home studio in New Plymouth, New Zealand.

Many of her paintings relate to landscapes, incorporating maps and rugged textures, along with newspaper clippings and screen-printed images. Her Red Planet series produced some very different landscapes, inspired by the recent attention given to Mars, as it passed closer to Earth in 2003, followed by NASA's two probes landing on the planet's surface in 2004.

Trish uses a combination of wheel and hand-building techniques on her pottery. Many of the individual lidded vessels made in recent years have been raku fired, an unpredictable and exciting method of firing where the flames determine the results. Pieces fired in this way are often reminiscent of artefacts from an ancient time.

Raku is a traditional Japanese way of firing and it was through her raku work that Trish was approached to produce over 200 pots for use on the set of the Tom Cruise film, The Last Samurai. Her lidded "Samurai Vessels" featured on this site were not included in the movie but were inspired by the experience.

Recent work includes a series of sculptured figures which were inspired by a study of the work of early 20thC sculptor Constantin Brancusi.

Trish's work has been in many national exhibitions including:
