Welcome to the twelfth edition of Phil's Yearly Quiz.

Class of 1980!!!

This quiz is currently closed. Click here for the answers.

These quizzes each focus on a specific year. Most of the lyrics are from songs which appeared on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in the given year. The remaining lyrics are from "album tracks", non-charting singles or songs not released as singles, that appeared on albums that were in the top 40 of Billboard's album chart in the given year. For each lyric below, identify the artist and title for 2 points each, doubled if you are the only entrant to get it correctly. Lyrics are arranged alphabetically by artist. Additionally, there are three bonus questions at the end of the quiz with points as indicated. Artists and title are per Joel Whitburn for songs that made the Hot 100, by latest US CD release otherwise.

Answers are due by 12 noon PST, Monday, December 13, 1999. Results will be posted by Friday, December 17.

One more note: This quiz is meant for fun and is intended to challenge you to recall and place lyrics you may have not heard in a long time. Its intent is not to test your ability to use search engines and the like to find lyrics on the Internet. Of course, I have no way of knowing where you got your answers, so all I can ask is that you abide by the spirit of this quiz. Thanks!

DO NOT POST ANSWERS TO USENET NEWSGROUPS! Enter interactively using the form below, or e-mail answers/comments/corrections to Phil. You should receive confirmation of your entry receipt within one or two business days.

NOTE! If the on-line entry form doesn't work for you, please send me an e-mail at pjf0226@yahoo.com telling me what sort of problem you had so I can try to fix it. Thanks!!

The year for this edition of Phil's Lyric Quiz is 1980. Warnings of "voodoo economics" aside, Americans elected Ronald Reagan president. Mount St. Helens erupted and John Lennon was shot. Sissy Spacek was a "Coal Miner's Daughter" while John Travolta was an "Urban Cowboy". Kareem Abdul-Jabbar led the Lakers to an NBA championship, and Brooke Shields assured us nothing came between her and her Calvins. But questions remained: Who shot J.R.? How do you solve a Rubik's Cube? Do you remember these songs? (24 Hot 100 hits, 1 album track)
