Dandys Press Articles

Article from Ormskirk Advertiser Series 20th November 1997, by Richard Felton.

Leeds lads are set to win over fans!

RICHARD FELTON meets the lead singer of a group with more about them than the name of a kids' comic...

WHEN are people going to sit up and take notice of this band - they are going to be HUGE!

The Dandys are cool, very cool. They look good, they sound good, and vocalist Andrew Firth talks good in his exclusive interview with the Advertiser.

The Leeds five-piece are set to release their debut LP early next year. As yet untitled, it is sure to take the British music scene by storm.

"We have just finished the album, we have been recording down in Oxford so we haven't really been touring," Andrew said.

"It's not going to come out until Febuary or March and we should have a single out in January."

The band aired their last single 'Dirty Weekend' on C5's Jack Docherty Show.

"The single just missed the top 75 which was unlucky.

"We got a lot of local radio play but not much on Radio One - unless they think it's going to be a top 20 hit they won't play it.

"But it takes a while for people to get used to a band - the next album could be a number one!"

Andrew says that it's difficult to pigeon-hole The Dandys into any kind of specific style:"It's quite difficult to describe - every song is different.

"We are edging away from pop music.

"Our music has a lot of quirkiness to it - Dandy's songs make you feel good - the music is uplifting."

And so what of the group's influences?;"It's very varied really, all the band are into the same type of thing but

have different tastes - I'm into David Bowie, 60s and 70s stuff.

"We don't really sound like any other band."

The Dandy's have supported Kenickie, Shed Seven and The Divine Comedy, but are quick to distance themselves from the whole Britpop movement.

"We don't really go around hanging out with the stars - I don't really think that Britpop exists anymore - we just play music."

The Dandys are on a 19-date British tour this month, which calls in at the Liverpool Lomax next Wednesday, November 26, and Andrew is looking forward to the gig.

"It's a bit of a wierd one playing Liverpool.

"We really have to work hard to please the audience in Liverpool - but that's good for us."
