Your privacy is very important. Counters on each of my pages utilize 'cookie' technology to help me understand how people use my site and ways that I can improve it. What type of anonymous profiles is WebSideStory collecting?

WebSideStory collects what it calls "anonymous click-stream profiles." These anonymous profiles are collected through the use of "cookies" -- a small text file that is placed on a user's hard drive whenever they pass over one of the more than 100,000 sites using our HitBox Web audience analysis technology. The anonymous profiles do not reveal any personally identifying information about a person, such as names or email address. In fact, they are totally anonymous. The profiles only tell us which browsers have been to which HitBox sites, and for how long. The profiles also contain information about browser versions, operating systems, screen resolutions, and color palettes.

How is this anonymous information collected?

It's simple. The first time you visit a site that uses our HitBox technology, you get a cookie. If you return to that site, the cookie is updated. If you go to another site using HitBox, you get a separate cookie. This is what we mean by "click-stream profiles" - we can tell the succession of HitBox sites that a particular browser has visited. A cookie, by itself, does not contain any personally identifying information. It simply helps us in recognizing return visitors.
