| Postpartum Doula Support | ||||||||
| Traditionally, a new mother would be surrounded by the loving support of an extended family and community in the days following childbirth. Often she would stay in bed for a period of time, from a few days to several weeks, bonding with her new baby, recuperating from the arduous task of labor, and undergoing her transformation into new motherhood slowly, while being cared for by mothers, sisters, midwives or the wise older women of the village. It is unfortunate that so many of us today are isolated from that kind of support for so many different reasons. Geography distances us from our families. Culture demands a quick recovery and even self-imposed expectations keep us from taking that special time with a newborn. That is where a postpartum doula can be so helpful. Whether you take advantage of her presence to catch a few desperately needed hours of sleep, rely on her experience and insight to help allay the normal doubts and worries that all new parents have, or really just need someone to throw in a load of laundry and get dinner started while you cuddle with baby, a postpartum doula can ease that transformation period when the whole family is adapting to a new baby. I encourage new moms to enlist their support team in advance and to plan on taking at least 10 days off from their normal routine of errands and housework. Especially if you plan to breastfeed, you will truly appreciate having already lined up help with meals and chores, as you and baby work on getting breastfeeding off to a good start. As a postpartum doula, I am especially interested in making sure everyone is being well fed. With over 5 years in the cooking industry, teaching cooking classes, and 10 years of breastfeeding experience, I look forward to helping the whole family relax during this special time. Every postpartum doula has a different approach. Each one will offer different services and expertise. You may want to interview several to find the one you will be most comfortable with. Feel free to email me with questions or to set up a free informational interview. |
