All of these records are current as of Feb. 4th, 2001.....these should be considered updated going into the state playoffs. ***Congrats to Eastside's Laura Tucker, who notched her 43rd assist of the season this week during districts. She needs only one more assist to set the all-time area girls assist record at 88 assists. Buchholz's Candace Cooper was the previous record holder at 87 assists. Cooper finished play at Buchholz in 1998. Tucker played against her on varsity for one year -- her freshman season. Laura had 5 assists in the 1997-98 season (freshman), 10 assists in her sophomore year, 29 assists in her junior year, and her 43 this season gives her 87 career assists going into Tuesday's playoff game with Pine Forest. Nobody else in area history comes within 30 career assists of Candace and Laura. Tucker has an uncanny knack for setting up goals in her midfield position. She was last year's Sun Player of the Year as a junior. She also is the single-season assists record holder, shattering Candace's record from 1998 of 34 assists. ***Eastside boys coach Scott Fries is officially the area's winningest coach after winning his 200th match early in the season. He is currently 214-98-38 with the Rams, including this year's 20-5-3 record going into the state playoffs. He has coached at the school as a head coach since the 1987-88 season and was an assistant under Randy Callahan the year prior to that. Gainesville former coach Greg Kynast was the area's winningest coach for many years after his stint with the Hurricanes, coaching from 1982 until 1983 and compiling a 179-74-22 record at the school with five district titles and a state runner up finish in 1992. Fries's teams have produced nine district titles and four runner up finishes in his 13 seasons. Only one season saw Fries' teams make the district championship (1989-90). ***Newberry's Nick Scott scored his 37th goal of the season the other night and now has 78 career goals and 63 career assists with a senior season left to play. His team will play at Pierson Taylor on Thursday. He scored in all three of his team's district games this past week. ***P.K. Yonge's Graham Ervin is the area's all-time leading scorer with 91 goals, and also doubles as thea rea's all-time leading assist man with 75 assists. He is a senior and still could add to his totals in the state playoffs starting this Thursday. After some recalculating of Columbia's Trevor Tyler's stats, it was found that he had fewer goals than previously known during his first two years of high school. It was reported that Tyler had 95 career goals, but he was in the high 80s. Ervin's teammate Bryan Kotait isn't too shabby a producer himself, scoring 74 career goals so far in just two seasons on varsity, which is good for fifth all-time. ***Buchholz girls coach Tino Rodrigues is shooting for his 100th career win on Tuesday against Fletcher in the playoffs. He has coached at the school for five seasons and is the school's all-time winningest coach and likely is the area's winningest coach in girls soccer also (records are still being verified). Former Buchholz coach Bill Buren, who started the girls and boys programs at Buchholz in the late 1970s and early 1980s, is believed to have been the area's winningest coach until Tino recently broke his record. Buren's teams won 96 girls games and a state title under the coach. ***Congrats to the Keystone Heights girls soccer team under coach Danielle Allison. The Indians are 18-6-0 and district champs in only their third season of soccer. They have scored 119 goals and have most of their team coming back next year. But first, the Indians get a chance to advance a few rounds at state with Crescent City coming up first on Tuesday. |
