Protectorate
Western Sahara: Formerly a Spanish protectorate, Spain
withdrew in 1976. Originally divided between Morocco and
Mauritania, but as of Aug. 5, 1979 Morocco
controls the entire region. A guerilla movement, the
Polisario Front, which proclaimed the region independent on
Feb. 27, 1976, has launched numerous attacks with
Algerian support. Morocco now has control of the
main urban areas, but Polisario guerrilas moved freely
through the vast deserts. The 2 sides implemented
a cease-fire in 1991, when a UN peace-
keeping force was deployed. A UN- sponsored referendum
on self- determination has been repeatedly postponed.
