SUPER-RADIOACTIVE
Agent Tucky through the Alien's eyes
This film began life as a church activity in early 2002. The boys asked me if I would come and make a film with them, so we spent an evening brainstorming and improvising ideas. By the end of the night we had a basic plot and some semblance of a script. Over the following eighteen months we re-wrote, improvised some more and finally completed shooting in October. It then took me two months to finish editing. This film was an EPIC.
Ken and Tucky are on the case
The basic plot involved two FBI agents investigating a possible alien invasion. Josef Kitt (who's character never had a name) played a man who's dog Fluffy was killed by a falling meteorite. This rock was covered in a strange green slime that he tasted, as he felt he had nothing left to live for. Slowly the Alien took possesion of his body, causing his eyes to bulge and his speech to become slow. Or is that because he couldn't remember his lines?
Josef following an unsuccesful game of Table Tennis
Josef was interrogated by Agent's Ken and Tucly but managed to escape whilst they argued. It was at this point that the film changed direction slightly and they all found themselves in the middle of a western, complete with a Morricone score. The main reason behind this was that the shooting was dragging out over months. We used the occasional tuesday evening and I began to suspect that we would never finish.
Josef in Dead Man's Gulch
During the summer I had been to a barbeque in a local park, and it struck me that it would make a great backdrop for a very low budget western. I also figured that the only way we were going to get this film finished was if we went out on a saturday and filmed everything we needed in one go. It didn't take me long to combine the two ideas and off to the park we went.
Deputy Ken and Sheriff Tucky on the lookout
We were fortunate enough to have good weather, so the ususally grey Stoke on Trent was able to pass (just) for sunnier Arizona. The boys proved themselves to be excellent actors and also made good some contributions to the directing, We got some great shots that cut together into a pretty convincing mini-western. At least, we thought so.
The final showdown
The final movie, an unusual blend of sci-fi, comedy, westerns and dog-handling, had a succesful premier at the newcastle chapel in December 2003, and will shortly be available on a Limited Edition collectable DVD.
