A chocolate Lab
happy labrador retriever dog training in reality

The purpose of this site is to clearly inform people about basic dog behavior and dog training. There are tons of MYTHS out there. Knowing these basics can make a huge difference in the quality of life, and the relationship you share with your dog.

Many people have misgivings about training their precious Fido of Fifi. They can't see any reason why training is necessary and feel that it gets in the way of a loving relationship with their dog. But nothing can be farther from the truth. Most importantly a trained dog is a safer dog. Dogs can be trained to wait before going outside (door dashers are likely to be hit by cars), to bring the newspaper (who wouldn't enjoy having a worth-while, appreciated job)or to observe proper etiquitte which can enrich the dog's life (a dog that doesn't jump on guests can be let in more, and dog that will pee on command can be taken more places)

And don't forget training is fun for dog and human alike!

In making this site I draw from:

  1. What I've read
  2. My experience in a dog boarding kennel
  3. What trainers have told me
  4. Discussion with co-workers in the animal field
  5. Adventures from training my own dogs

Remember it is important to take your dog's character and personality into account when beginning to train. Experiment and find several different ways to teach the same thing for optimal success. If you are having problems with aggression contact a professional trainer or veterinarian. And remember that changes in your dog's behavior's and habits could mean trouble. Be particularily aware if an active dog becomes sluggish.
