It eventually evolved into the production Kit Cars that were made in 1978. Both a Dodge and Plymouth version were available. The option code for the Kit Cars is A43 which should appear on the fender tag. Is it a coincidence that this was also the number for Richard Petty? I doubt it! Petty had problems trying to run his 1974 Charger as late as the 1978 NASCAR year. He asked for wind tunnel testing on the Dodge Magnum but found that it just wasn't competitive. We all know where he went from there - brand X cars. Hopefully he'll be back in NASCAR in 2001 with an Intrepid team. Recent news confirms that Dodge WILL field teams in 2001.
According to Galen G. these were a late availability car unlike the Super Coupes which were a "full year" offering. Dodge Kit Cars were 2-tone red and maroon; Plymouth Kit Cars were 2-tone light and medium blue. They shared the same wheels as the Super Coupes. The wheel flares, spoilers, hood pins(non-funtional), decals and window straps front and rear are unique to the Kit Cars. These parts are not shared with the Super Coupes. Most, if not all, of the Kit Cars were delivered to the original dealers with the three big "43" decals in the trunk. I have to think that some of the owners felt a little uncomfortable with the size of these and never installed them on the doors and the roof.
Regular production Kit Cars are generally thought to have been built on the regualar assembly line on specific dates in groups. The dates I have so far include:
