While he achieved tag team success as a member of the Smokin’ Gunns, he was never in the limelight more than when he was a member of D-Generation X with his New Age Outlaw partner Road Dogg Jesse James. Though not original members of the group, the Outlaws were the much-needed catalyst that helped get the second edition of the most controversial group in sports-entertainment history off the ground. The Outlaws became official members of DX the night after WrestleMania XIV. Gunn and Road Dogg squared off against their WrestleMania opponents Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie in a Steel Cage rematch. As the match progressed, Triple H and a returning X-Pac came to the ring. Their reason for being ringside was unknown at the time, but things soon became clear. The two Superstars, who earlier reformed D-Generation X without founding member Shawn Michaels, helped the Outlaws regain the gold. It was official – the Outlaws were now members of DX. And to commemorate the memorable moment, each Superstar climbed on the top turnbuckle of a corner and delivered crotch chops in unison as the crowd went crazy. Gunn and James went on to amazing success while in DX. The duo captured the World Tag Team Championship on four separate occasions, and each time, Mick Foley was on the opposing team. In addition to defeating Foley (as Cactus Jack) the night after WrestleMania XIV, the Outlaws went on to defeat Foley by himself (after Kane refused to tag with him), the Rock N’ Sock Connection and Foley & Al Snow. The New Age Outlaws had the perfect attitude to fit in with a group like DX. They were charismatic and loved to have a good time at other people’s expenses, but they never let having a good time get in the way of taking care of business. Because above all, they were one of the most ruthless tag teams that WWE has ever seen. After DX disbanded, Gunn went on to have a successful singles career as well. In fact, he formed a partnership with former DX-mate Chyna. After joining forces, Gunn was able to secure a victory over Eddie Guerrero for the Intercontinental Championship. It just goes to show just how powerful DX could be. Even after the group was disbanded, Gunn was able to capture the same magic when he and Chyna joined forces. |
