Prior to his involvement with wrestling, Mero was a champion amateur boxer. He was a three-time winner of the Golden Gloves competition held in New York, before deciding to give up boxing and proceed with a career in professional wrestling.

He debuted in 1991 for World Championship Wrestling as Mark Merro, a jobber wrestler. He was soon repackaged as Johnny B. Badd a gimmick loosely based on early rock star Little Richard. He wore a feather boa to the ring and was initially managed by Teddy Long. His bigger feuds were against Lord Steven Regal, "Stunning" Steve Austin and Arn Anderson. He eventually got rid of Long, the makeup and the boa but kept the name and won Kimberly Page's freedom from Diamond Dallas Page, along with the WCW Television Title.

After objecting to several proposed storylines because of his faith as a born-again Christian, Mero had a falling out with WCW Vice-President Eric Bischoff in early 1996. Mero signed with the WWF, debuting at WrestleMania XII as "Wildman" Marc Mero. He would later use his wife Sable as his valet.

In the latter part of the summer in 1996, Ahmed Johnson had to vacate the Intercontinental Championship because of a serious kidney injury. As a result, the WWF held a tournament to decide a new champion. Marc Mero would defeat Faarooq Asad to become the new Intercontinental Champion. This would be peak of Mero's success in the WWF.

After missing several months with an injury, he returned with the new persona of "Marvelous" Marc Mero, a boxer. Mero became jealous of Sable's fan following and wanted her out of the WWF. At Over the Edge, he defeated Sable with a small package, which resulted in her leaving the WWF for a short time. After he dropped Sable as his valet, he became Jacqueline's manager.

In late 1998, Mero competed in the WWE's Brawl For All tournament, losing to Steve Blackman in the first round. However, Mero would replace Blackman in the quarterfinals due to injury, but he lost again to Bradshaw.

After Sable quit the WWF and filed a $110 million lawsuit against the company over allegations of sexual harassment and unsafe working conditions, Marc was dropped from WWF programming. His later release from WWF was a part of the out-of-court settlement reached between Sable and the WWF. Marc retired from wrestling to manage Rena's career as an actress and celebrity-for-hire.

Marc & Rena Mero were divorced in 2003. Mero made sporadic appearances as Johnny B. Badd for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, including pay-per-view appearances, but has since departed from the company.
