Bully Info
It is believed the Bulldog originated in the British Isles.  The name bull was applied to the breed because of it's connection in bullbaiting.  By the eighteenth century the sport became outlawed, but there remained Bulldog loyalists that kept the breed going.  The ferocity was bred out of the Bulldog and they became symbolic of trust, loyalty and courage.

Today's Bulldogs are gentle, loving, laid back and very playful.  They are wonderful with children and make excellent family members.  I often half joke that with a Bulldog you don't need a TV as you can sit and watch them play for hours.  The are very amusing and a joy to have around!

But please do your research.  The Bulldog is not for everyone.  They will never be your running companion and they overheat very easily.  They are indoor dogs and pretty much 55 pound lap pups or couch potatoes.  If you are prepared for the extra work and decide the Bulldog is the right breed for you, I can almost guarantee you will love having one of these guys as part of your family.  They are eternal children and very loving.
Problems associated with the breed include overheating, which is a big danger to Bulldogs.  Their short faces make it more difficult for them to breath, especially in the heat.  Traveling in cars, strenuous exercise and sunbathing (which they love to do) can result in a deadly situation.   Bulldogs can also chill easily and therefore MUST be an inside dog, regardless of your climate.

Bulldogs are known to love water - BUT THEY CANNOT SWIM.  They need to be treated like toddlers around swimming pools and never left alone.
