I'm a 27 year old guy at the time of writing (2007). I'm currently doing corrections to my physics PhD, after which i have to get a job. I began coding in Dark Basic ages ago. I can't remember exactly, but it's probably about 5 years. Since then i've been toying with it on and off. The past few years mostly off, because of work commitments, but I've had a bit of free time lately. I'm interested in making fun games, and realising my ideas, and also in creating efficient algorithms and devising cunning ways of doing stuff.
If i have enough time, i want to make...
* SUPER BADASS SPACESHIP X. This is what I'm doing at the moment, but I have so many ideas that most of them will end up in a sequel. * A new version of my multiplayer tank game, possibly with online. This was the first half decent thing in DB classic i made, and it was actually fun to play. I'll probably whack up a version of this here. Knowing what i know now, it could be hella better. * A Wipeout clone. Because Wipeout is awesome. * A sandbox driving sim. I kind of started one in DB classic, and have been thinking about this a lot. Would be logical to use an existing physics engine for this, like Newton. I thought up an awesome name for this, so i have to do it. * A cross between Gran Turismo and Rollcage- futuristic rollercoaster stuff, but with lovely real physics and futuristic supercars. * A shooter thing where you can run about on the surface of objects with a spider tank or something.I just thought this would be pretty cool. * A flying thing. I was trying to make flying things a lot in DB classic, but didn't have the knowledge at the time to make them work. It'd be nice to go back and do this properly. |

My favourite games:
I'm inspired by a lot of things, a fraction of which i am conciously aware of. However, the games that i admire the most are probably and hopefully most influential in my work. When i realise what i'm doing is just like something else, is it because i am unoriginal and ripping it off (like the guy in Farscape), or is it just that i make what i like, and what i like is therefore like what i like to make? Does it really matter?
ZEEWOLF. Awesome helicopter game on the Amiga. It's like Virus (or Zarch if you're anal) but with more helicopters. Super Badass Spaceship X is kind of like this, in that there's a wrapping grid based world, destructible buildings, flat polygons, and there's going to be level objectives and stuff. WALKER. Awesome walk around in a big robot tank and shoot things game on the Amiga. I like the separate targeting and moving control, and the scary gun. Come to think of it, i'm not ripping this off as much as i would like. Super Badass Spaceship X has an overheating gun with a beep beep sound, just like DMA ripped straight out of ALIENS, (which is the best film ever) sound effects and all. I also made a mouse gun with rightclick lockon in my old helicopter game, but that was rubbish because you had to take your hands off the other controls to shoot it. SILENT BOMBER. Criminally underappreciated Playstation game. It's really awesome. Great gameplay and lovely design. I'd like to remake this. Actually, i'd like to make a game based around CLOD the tank. WIPEOUT. Awesome game. 2097 was the first PS game i had, and it's the best Wipeout. The control just feels so right. Great design and tracks too. Fusion not only didn't control as nicely, but the saminess and several permutations of any one level meant you never knew where you were. GRAVITY FORCE 2. I love this game. It's a two player split screen thing where you fly around in spaceships (like Thrust), and try to kill eachother. Maybe this is where i got the bug for the rotate and thrust thing. Would love to do a new version. With modern computing power could probably do some funky physics stuff with the destuctible terrain.
I like other games too. If you are really lucky I'll tell you all about that later. |
