Magdala House - Lovely Old Stone Villa
Lush Gardens, Tropical evergreens, Various Types of Fruit and Citrus Trees, Traditional Hand Painted Tiles, Marble Sculptures, Fountains & Fish Pond, Dog Kennels. A real "FIND" for the art lover, the gardener, dog breeder, etc.
It would make an ideal home for adult ex-patriots, a retired couple, a diplomat's residence, etc. The house is truly unique in Portugal. It has a few number of very large rooms and the gardens are rich and spacious. Most Portuguese homes have many small rooms and little or no garden. It's not for everyone, but the buyer will love it. Our home does need a bit of work to restore it to the original grandeur. But it's basically repainting, inside and out. The structure is sound and the fittings, mainly recent, are solid wood not fibre board.
This old-style stone villa is situated on a well wooded, and gardenend, 975 SqM walled plot in Alcoitão, a small village 20 km west of Lisbon.

The house is a 1960’s renovation of an old Portuguese family cottage built by a mature diplomat for his personal use. The superb outer structure is built around the original cottage with a winter garden added at ground level, a large first and a second floor.
Massive stone arches support a 40 SqM balcony which covers the veranda and the railing is made of carved stone columns supporting stone lintels.
The first floor is cantilevered at the side and the back so there are covered walkways around the house. There is a sea view of the Atlantic from the main balcony and the small 2nd story balcony that also has stone railings.
There are many traditional tile paintings &, original stone sculptures (see pictures below), tiled fountains, a small bathing pool as well as large pond with goldfish and turtles. There are stone walkways, raised flower beds and herb garden, some fenced areas and trees inside the front wall giving privacy and shade. There is a separate 30 M2 guesthouse with its own fenced patio, a living / sleeping room, a kitchenette with fridge, stove and sink; a small bathroom with toilet, sink and shower.
Guest House
There is a winter garden at the side and large garage with plenty of storage space, a workshop & a laundry room; a small bathing pool and two dog kennels at the back. The lovely gardens contain a wide variety of tropical trees, fruit, grape vines, shrubs and flowers. There is a small vegetable patch which is very fertile because of the thick layer of black topsoil covering the lands. There are various types of oranges and mandarins, lemon, pomegranate, plum, nespas, etc.
The 100 M2 first floor has a grand bedroom, a massive 50+ M2 living room with marble floor, Roman columns & very large bathroom.

The floors and walls are made of traditional tiles or marble. The main ground floor living / dining area has old fashioned, hand painted tile walls.

There are working fireplaces in the main ground and first floor living areas.
The structure of the original cottage remains, with 40+cm walls which keep the main area cool in the summer and a comfortable in the winter (27ºC - 22ºC).

The building is a marvel of space. It has only a few small rooms - most are grand; it is the foreigners who will appreciate what we have found and helped make.

Of the original eight small rooms on the ground floor of the old cottage, four have been rebuilt to provide a large, spacious 40SqM kitchen / dining area that makes cooking and entertaining a pleasure.
The kitchen is purpose build, Scandinavian designed with large chestnut working areas, lots of shelves and drawers. The cooking area has a custom made and very practical stainless steel surface with large, deep sinks. Ideal for someone who enjoys cooking and preparing large meals. There is a marble walled bath room, a small library with built-in book shelves and a pantry room with deep storage shelves that is used as an office / computer room.

The second floor consists of a large room with gables at the front and rear for the small balcony and stairwell. It is suitable as an office, bedroom, storage or playroom. It could easily be converted into a separate suite or bedrooms by adding gables at the sides for additional vertical space.

The Winter Garden can serve as a vestibule or could easily be incorporated into the dining area serving as a separate eating area.
Because of the nearby Serra de Sintra, the micoclimate ensures that there is always a refreshing breeze even on the hottest of days.

There is cable TV, two phone lines and a high speed data connection, so use of the premises as a small business office, a clinic or a prestigous corporate executive centre is quite a viable option.
If the arched veranda and covered walkway were glassed in, the bulding would make a an elegant 60 m2 restaurant or bar with seating for a hundred or so patrons. The elegant upstairs living room and 1st floor balcony could also be used to double the amount of space.
The village of Alcoitão has a several cafés, restaurants, food shops, a butcher, a Lidl discount supermarket and most people's day to day shopping requirements. A large mall, Cascaisshopping is nearby and other towns, villages and shops are within a few minutes drive.

The house is near Estoril / Cascais, Sintra (10km) and 25 minutes drive to Lisbon airport. It is close to the motorway, shopping centres, cinemas, several golf courses, beaches, nature zones, English and American schools, tennis clubs, sports centres, hippodromes, etc.
