How to get there from Reykjavik: Take Route 41 south towards Keflavik. Go straight past Hafnir turn, Navy base, Keflavik, and Njardvik. At circle, follow sign for Gardur. Go through second circle and follow sign for Gardur. Continue along road about 7 km into Gardur. Go straight through town, over several speed bumps, until road dead ends at seawall. Turn right towards small lighouse on peninsula. At north end seawall, there will be a small lighthouse on your left and a larger lighthouse on your right with some old boats in front of it. Free Iceland is the break in front of the large lighthouse and boats. A smaller wave breaks near the smaller lighthouse, and there are very large outside lefts well outside of the reef in front of the small lighthouse where the reef turns from west facing to north facing.
Notes: This break is only worth checking on a very large south swell with south winds. When Grindavik and the west facing spots are 12-15' (4+ meters) and the wind is howling out of the south, the swell will wrap around the peninsula and be offshore and ridable here. There are actually several breaks here. The first one from the left (west) is a large outside reef break that is unridden to my knowledge. There are definately heavy currents here due to the turn in the peninsula, and the large swells. Play at your own risk. It will break left very big though.
The second break is on the inside, just in front of the seawall. At high tide, a waist high little peeler will break just to the right of the lighthouse- there may be other smaller reefs working as well. At low tide, the reef is exposed.
Free Iceland (named after Free Hawaii on the West Side of Oahu) is the break in front of the larger lighthouse with the boats in front of it. It is a relatively mushy reefbreak, but can have fairly long rides. It breaks a bit outside. There is a lot of kelp.
