Emergency Checklist

The next time a disaster strikes, you may not have much time. It is therefore prudent to prepare now for a sudden emergency. Learn how to protect yourself and cope with disaster by planning ahead. This checklist can help you get started. Discuss it with your family and then prepare your own emergency plan. Post the plan in the house where everyone can access it in case of any emergencies.

Create an Emergency Plan

    • Find out which disasters might occur in your area - is the location prone to storms, snow, forest fires, floods, etc.
    • Learn your community's evacuation routes.
    • Learn about the emvercy plans in your workplace.
    • Learn about emergency plans for your children's school or day care center.
    • Meet with household members to discuss the dangers of fire, severe weather, earthquakes and other emergencies. Explain how they might respond to each.
    • Find the safe spots in your home for each type of disaster.
    • Discuss what to do about power outages and personal injuries.
    • Draw a floor plan of your home. Mark two escape routes from each room.
    • Show family members how to turn off water, gas, and electriciy at the main switches.
    • Post emergency telephone numbers near your phones.
    • Teach children how and when call 911, police and fire.
    • Instruct family members to turn on radio for emergency information.
    • Pick on out of stateand one local friend or relative for family members to call if seperated during a disaster.
    • Teach children your out of state contact's phone number.
    • Pick two emergency meeting places. A place near your home in case of a fire. An place outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return home after a disaster.
    • Take a basic first aid course and CPR class.
    • Keep family records in a water and fireproof container.
    • Prepare a disaster survival kit.
    • Prepare a car emergency kit.
