Survival Shelters
Survival shelters present several  challenges to a survival instructor. They have to be simple enough so that a survivor would actually take the time to construct one. More often than not, real "survivors" decide that they are going to spend the night in the woods sometime just before or shortly after  dark. Building an adequate shelter is usually not practical, nor feasible, especially an all natural one. Nor,is it  realistic to assume that people practice building them. They require huge amounts of boughs and/or branches to construct one.  Unless you are on private land, it is  unlawful to utilize natural materials in such a way.. Many in our business have to resort to utilizing debris such as fallen leaves and pine needles. Having tried these "survival" shelters, I vowed to come up with a better solution The shelters that you are about to learn were not taught to me by any of the survival schools in this country. I got my ideas by watching native peoples from Africa and South America on the Discovery Channel . These shelters made a lot more sense to me than the lean-to, A-frame, or, tipi type shelters taught predominately in this country. Moreover, you can practice building survival shelters without denuding the forest.  I will do my best in the this segement to convince you that you can  build a natural shelter that will keep you and yours safe, warm, dry, and relatively comfortable in a survival situation.
****I would hate to think that I was responsible for the deforestation of our public lands, so, please obey the laws of the State and City Parks and National Forests.
