The Hand Socket
The hand socket fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. It can be made out of hardwoods, resinous woods, bone (vertebrae), antlers(at the juncture where the tines split) , or smooth, flat rocks. A small notch in the center will hold the top of the drill in place.
1) a comfortable fit is important. Since the drill will "eat" through this wood also, it should be at least 3/4" thick (if made of hardwood).Thickness is not too relevant, however, if made of bone or rock
2) I have found this to be the best way to grasp the socket in the hand. The notch should be in the center of your palm, and the thumb along the side of the socket. Notice the crook in the wrist(thumbside). This is where the shinbone will be pressed into for maximum stabilization
