First method - using an awl |
1) approx. 1/2" from the end, drill a hole with the "awl" blade of your knife |
2) this awl is just the right size for the diameter of parachute cord |
3) tie an overhand knot in one end of the cord. From the top side of the bow, string the unknotted end of the cord through the hole |
4) the knot should keep the cord from slipping through |
Second method...without an awl |

1) 2" from one end of the cord, make an overhand loop.(A loop is formed when the cord crosses over or under itself) The cord in the right hand is over the top |
<---bite |
<---loop |
2) slide your hand dowm the cord about three inches from the loop. Now, form a bite or "U" shape in the rope. It does not cross |
<--bite |
<--loop |
3) push the bite up through the loop enough to get the end of the bow through it. The bow goes through the bite |
4) grab the ends of the cord on either side of the knot and pull tight |
5) letting go of the short end, pull the slip knot tight up to the bow |
6) trim the end off. Excess can act as a broom and sweep away your ember |
