"PHYLOGENY RECAPITULATES ONTOGENY"
Down Came 1000 Lines
of Tears, by Kara Maria
|
Bloodied by the event,
There was nowhere to go but in
Backward and down;
My head fit neatly
Into a fetal tuck and roll
Already bowed in defeat;
Something had to hold me together
And all I had left
Was my own hands and arms and feet;
Growing gills for a sea of amniotic tears,
I grew in my ears, and sealed over my eyes,
Forgot how to speak
Deformed my empty hands into knobs
And attached an umbilical cord
Into a closed system
Aborting myself back from the world
Into the mother I wasn't any more.
Susan Dunn has been crazy about babies for as long as I can remember.
She was first girl in our class to start babysitting and she was the only
girl in our small college to find a job babysitting in town.
