The sacred art of relating harmoniously
Interesting tidbits:
The carnations are perennials native to southern Europe and India. Plants are bushy clumps about thirty centimetres high and twenty centimetres wide. Clumps have two to five flowers per stem with a sweet fragrance that increases in the evening. Flower colours are purple, pink, white, and anything in between.
The genus name comes from the Greek
dios, divine, and anthos, flower, referring to its fragrance. The species name caryophyllum refers to the name of the plant that produces the cloves of commerce (Caryophyllus aromaticus, also called Eugenia caryophyllata and Syzygium aromaticum) because of the clove-like fragrance of Dianthus flowers. The common name of carnation comes from carne, meaning flesh, because of the colour of the flowers.
The dried petals are added to potpourri and occasionally to cosmetics.
Petals from fresh flowers are great additions to salads, soups, and drinks.
The flowers, when steeped in white wine, were used as flavourings and were thought to have aphrodisiac properties.
