| Interesting tidbits:
Firs are evergreen coniferous trees. They prefer mountainous regions. All true firs have upright cones perched high up on the branches like fat candles. Fir cones break up while they are still on the tree, instead of falling on the ground intact like spruce or pine cones. Conifers produce resin to prevent insects from attacking the tree. The name “fir” is from the Latin abire, to go away, used in the sense of distance from the ground. It refers to the height that some firs attain. Bark from Abies balsamea is used in microscopy and optics under the name of Canada balsam. The silver fir is a Druid sacred tree, known to them as the birth tree. Druids burned the needles or swept around the bed with a branch to bless and protect a mother and newborn baby. |
