| Interesting tidbits:
The wallflower is a perennial sub-shrub, naturally occurring in all of southern Europe on old walls, quarries, and sea cliffs. All have the typical four-petalled flowers that give the crucifers (the cabbage family) their name. It is a branching woody-based plant thirty to seventy-five centimetres tall, with narrow green leaves and broad clusters of fragrant flowers in cream, yellow, orange, red, brown, or burgundy. The flowers are sometimes shaded or veined with a contrasting colour. The meaning of the genus name Cheiranthus is obscure but the Latin name is derived from cheir, a hand, and anthos, a flower, because the flowers were suitable for hand bouquets. It is probably from the Arabic kheyri (a sweet-smelling red flower) or keiri, a hand bouquet. Wallflowers were introduced into England about 300 years ago. In olden times this flower was carried in the hand at festivals. |
