| Tidbits; The yew is an evergreen from N. Europe to N. Africa and in Asia as far as the Caucasus. Taxus is an ancient Latin name for Yew.Baccata means having fruits with a pulpy texture. The yew is a remarkably long lived tree, fossils have been discovered dating from the Tertiary period, and their have been specimens found 1500 years old. The association this tree has with worship began with the yew was considered sacred by the Druids, who built their temples near these trees. They related it to death and birth with the winter solstice. The early Christains followed this tradition and built their early churches near these trees. The Irish used the hard wood to make dagger handles and bows. The wood is said to be resistant to the action of water, and was used before the introduction of iron. |
