| Interesting tidbits:
The cactus family contains a large number of succulent plants. They are generally leafless but have stems evolved into cylinders, pads, or joints that store water in times of drought. Their thick skin reduces evaporation, and they have spines or prickles to protect themselves from browsing animals. The flowers are vivid; the fruit is sometimes colourful, and may be edible. Shoshone Indians used the Opuntia cactus' fresh pulp as addressing on cuts and wounds, to soothe pain and encourage healing. Also rubbed on the skin, the fuzzy spines were used to removes warts and moles. The juice or flower tea was used to treat diabetes and urethritis. Fresh leaves are cooked with pork and eaten as a tonic or cut and applied externally to abscesses. Most cacti are from the Americas, where they live from sea level to the mountains, and from the deserts to the rainforest. They can range in height from a few centimetres to fifteen metres. The cactus gets its name from the Greek kaktos, a name used by the philosopher Theophrastus for “an unknown prickly plant.” |
