In Saturday’s issue of our newspaper we published the story of Iliana – a prostitute in Italy. This investigation was the start of serial materials written thanks to a mutual international investigation of “24 hours” daily and “168 hours” daily, uncovering the scheme for transformation of Bulgarian girls into white slaves in Italy.
In our yesterday’s issue we narrate the first part of Natalia’s story, kidnapped when she was 15 years-old from her native town Roman and who was resold 18 times in Greece and afterwards transferred to Italy.
I’ve always done what I’ve wanted to and I’ve never listen to anybody. Little by little my life started to wreck. I fell into the company of bad people and I my school have not done well.
When I was 15 years-old I left the school and started to work in a factory for wood. One Saturday with one of my friends we went to a discothèque. We started to quarrel for stupid things and I left angry the disco alone. The time was around 2 a.m.
To my way home suddenly a car stopped on the street. There were five people inside – Ilian, Misho, Georgi, Bobby and Daniel. Ilian got down the car. He started to ask me various things. I just stared to explain him
something and he
drown out a gun and
he gagged my mouth
with a hand and forced me to get into the car. They drove me to Blagoevgrad town. There were four more girls they treated very badly. The men who kidnapped me told me they will not hurt me if I am obedient. So it happened. The other girls though they used to beat and torment them, because they used to stand against the situation. In a week period two Macedonians came – Miki and Sava. Their goal was to negotiate with the people who held us.
We were 7 girls and all of us were transferred through the border. It was pouring with rain and we hardly used to walk through the mountain. We were escorted by four Turkish men, who used to live in Macedonia for years. In Macedonia each one of the
girls was forced
to enter into
the luggage-carrier of a car
The cars used to move with great speed and after a while we stopped in front of some house that belonged to one of the Turkish men.
At down we left on foot to Greece. We stayed 3-4 hours at the border. There were Moldavians, Romanians and Ukrainians girls at the same place. They used to cry and they used to ask us for help.
After a while Dani – the Serbian came together with Sava. They bought me together with three more girls for the total amount of 8 millions drachmas (for about 5000 Euro for each one of us).
We’ve get into some car, that raced and we arrived in Thessalonica, at Sava’s house. He was a repulsive type, who had spent 15 years in prison. He wanted to sell me right away because I was under-aged. Two Greek men Russian by birth – Niko and Yuri bought me from him. They had contacts with the Russian mafia. I was a prostitute for 20 days in a low-class hotel then I was resold to another Greek – Yanis.
15 days after Sava called. He wanted to take me back. They get me into a bus and told me to get down in Thessalonica, where he waited me.
I spent seven months in Greece. For this period of time
I was resold 18 times to
a different people.
The last time I was bought by Aloni – a Greek. He also bought one more girl from Belarus. Three months later he cedes me for a while to Djime – an Albanian who was responsible to find me clients. He though wanted me for himself. He even asked if I agree with this.
I accepted with having no idea of the fact what kind of monster he is. He forced me to call Adoni and to tell him that I don’t want to work for him. After this case they both had a bestially fight for me.
I spent 20 days with Djimi and I understood what kind of boar he is. I called to another Albanian – Indrid. He promised me assistance. One day he came to pick me up with four more Albanians – Beni, Besnik, Badji and Altin. Before I go with them they beat to death the travesty guy Ana who picked up the money from my clients.
Afterwards we ran away with Indrid’s car. We went to his cousin’s house. His name was Besnik, but everybody called him Nino – this was his nickname. He also wanted me for himself. And once again I was tied up.
The cousins thrashed each other non stop. They intimidated to kill me. At last Indrid relaxed and told Nino he will give me for 5000 drachmas.
A month later we left with Nino to Albania. Nino’s uncle – Nuriu had a little boat. He had to drive me to Italy. We sailed away after 6 moths, but obviously this was not
the proper day
because the Albanian
police stopped us.
They drove us at the police station and detained us for five days. When we went out Nino was beaten to death by five Albanians. We were forced to stay in the house one more month, because he could not walk or even eat.
As soon as he recovered, we departed to Italy with the truck. We were 30 men and me, a lonely woman. We arrived in Brindizi where some Italian waited for us. He loaded us up into a covered mini-bus. He drove us to Brindizi railway station where we took the train. We traveled together with Nino and his cousin Alfred. We got down in Rome where we were met by four Albanians. In the first 7-8 months in Italy I entered a dangerous game. Each week we used to travel to Albania with the little boat and
we imported arms and drugs
into Italy
I used to hide them into my underwear, because the police didn’t check up women. Our group had taken part ten persons. Once in Valona Nino get embroiled with two men from the band. To pay him back they raped me when I went shopping. They drove me to the mountain and they might kill me if I was not able to escape. I have hidden myself into some big bushes. Afterwards I ran down the street and used to run till I found a telephone booth. I called Nino and I asked him to pick me up. I left in his house for about ten days and then we went back to Italy, where I started to work on the street. Three months later I had been started to prostitute on a street in Rome, for the first time I was robbed – they take me 800 000 liras, (800 lv.). Later on the same incident happened to me in Frozinone, not far away from the Italian capital. Over there the Albanian used to prohibit me to work at the places I’ve been chosen. At one time two of them came pretending to be clients. They drove me with a car
In the forest above Fondi
And raped me
They shouted at me and beat me, but I was not scared. Apparently they’ve looked for another girl, because about 5 a.m. they let me go. I went down on foot and I reached the house. I knocked the door but nobody opened it. After a while in front of the house a white Audi stopped. The window opened and a young boy called out to me. He was a policeman. I went with him to the police station in Lenula, where I told what happened to me.
Together with the carabineers I searched the two Albanians for three days, but we could not catch them. We found though their pictures, thanks to it in ten days one of them was arrested.
After that I escaped for the first time, but a day after that Nino and Alfred found me in Rome. Fortunately Nino was just angry and did not do me anything.
I stayed for 15 days in the house in Frozinone and stood idle. When I went out again on the street I met a guy from Neapol – Danilo. He stared to come often to see me. He used to give me money without wanting anything in return.
Three months later I ran away with him in a village close to Torino. After a week period 7 Albanians (Djentiani, Dritan, Panayot, Dashi, Nino, Alfred and Chimi) came with two cars in Danilo’s house in Neapol. I still do not know how they found him.
They beaten to death his father
and they threaten his family.
They told me that will take his 13 years-old sister and will make her a prostitute and will set their house on fire. After that they beat Danielo to death as well, but me they dragged away to the car. I started to work again on the street but this time in Rome. I used to leave Frozinone at 7 p.m. with the train and I used to arrive in the capital around 9 p.m. After that I used to catch the train back at 5.30 a.m. Several months later I decided to disclose the Albanians. The carabineers in Rome took me to an asylum for witnesses. I did not stand to be there for a long time, because the conditions were very bad and I ran away. I was not alone. I took with me one Albanian girl – Maniola, she was 14 years-old. While we waited the train they found us and we had to go back to the protection house.
Ten days later I called Nino and I told him that I was detained because I was under-aged. We ran away again but this time Nino together with Alfred was waiting for us at the railway station.
We went to Frozinone, where Maniola went to live together with Alfred. A short time afterwards she wanted to work with me on the street, but I refuse her because she was too little and with her around me I would have problem as well.
In April I ran away again with a client called Luciano. We lived in his house in Ferentino. From time to time I used to call Nino because I was jealous of him. After 20 days I called him but I remained silent on the phone. Nino
Responded he loves me
and he misses me
Then he added that if I do want to come back to him, at least to send him money.
Luciano did not want to call Nino, but when I was alone I used to do it. Sometimes Luciano used to send me to work in Rome to make money. In June my monthly cycle did not come. I went to a gynecologist and he told me I was pregnant. He sent me to an additional check up to another doctor and the medical examination revealed that the baby is dead for two days. The baby that I used to call Angela was 7 months old and used to weigh 2 kilograms and a half.
One day I called Nino again and an Albanian woman Almira picked up the phone. She presented herself as his wife. I started to offend her and I told her that I will kill her. Several days after, while Luciano was at work, I went to the market in Frozinone. Nino often used to go there too. I used to carry with me
A knife and
A bag with alcohol
I drank everything in order to pluck up courage and to kill the woman. As I expected I met them together at the market. I track them out to a narrow street. I griped Almira’s hair, I used to smite her and to swear at her. Nino ran away. When I tried to stab her someone clutched my hand. It was a policeman. After an interrogation they set me free and I went back to Luciano again. From time to time I used to work and I continued to call Nino. Thereby nine months passed and I decided to leave everything. One night, while I was alone I drunk one bottle of whisky and I called the police. They took me to the police-station and I tald them everything I was passed through. After a few days they took me to father Giovanni in Frozinone. From there, to make assurance double sure, they took me as far as in Brachiliano to Don Emanuel and his assistants. For a while I used to call Nino again, but then I stopped. I just was too tired of this entire story.
Her father is afraid
she could get into the street again
Natalia’s family lives in a modest house overflowed with flowers at the outskirts of Roman town.
On Saturday afternoon around the yard of the house potters about Geri – the 11 years-old Natalia’s younger sister. She is a beautiful, radiant and talented child, but unfortunately she was born deaf.
Oksana is Natalia’s step mother who bustles about the little girl with a bottle of Fanta in her hand. Ivan - the father comes back from fishing.
“I had a sixth sense today that someone from Sofia will visit me and will tell me news about Natalia.”, Ivan Georgiev smiles sorrowfully. Then he directs his eyes to the nothing.
“This is a big pain!”, the man hangs his head. “After my daughter disappeared I made a complaint in the police. Two of the girls that were kidnapped together with her were saved by the police at the Macedonian border. I contacted the girls and they told me everything. I found
the accommodations where
the girls were kept.
It was located in Elenovo – a neighborhood of Blagoevgrad town. I was together with a boss from the Regional Team for Fight with the Organized Criminality in Vratza town. He is retired at the present.”
“We found of the blackguards in Cherven Briag. He used to live as a brute in the yard of the former farmyard.”, Natalia’s father recalls. “He hide himself because the police was looking for him high and low.”. Natalia’s father and the cop inform about the case the Regional Team for Fight with the Organized Criminality in Blagoevgrad. “The police told us to not intervene, because they work on this case. But however they did not detained the pimps.”, gets angry the father.
For the first time Natalia calls home two years after she disappears. She only says: “I am alive.”
She calls several more times. The conversations consist of distressing pauses interrupted by “Yes” or “No” answers. It was evident she is kept under control. “Somebody prompted at her.”, the father says. Just once Natalia relaxed. She gave a cry: “I have fears for you!”
These cut-throat thugs from
the Albanian mafia
are capable to kill us implacably!”
In his agony the father gives an absurd advice to his daughter: “Do what they want you to do, but just stay alive!”
Natalia cries: “They splashed one of the girls with gas and then set her on fire!”
Later “Pope Yoan XIII” takes Natalia under his wing. The girl writes her confession. People from the foundation introduce her to the Prime Minister Silvio Berluskoni. During this visit he is touched and gives her a cheque for 2500 EURO.
For the first time Natalia comes back to Bulgaria last summer. She spends about a months in her native town Roman, but she prefers Italy. Today she is a salesgirl in Rimini. Her parents are worried because she calls once in a great while.
Every time Ivan Georgiev – Natalia’s father, comes to Sofia, he goes to the bus station where the buses for Rimini departure. “165 levas is the price of the one way ticket. If I take two-way one I will save 15 levas”, he counts helplessly.
The father is not able to collect this money. “I will calm down only when I see with my own eyes Natalia is O.K. in Rimini”, he moves to tears.
They are tracing the Mouse,
a boss of the pimps in
Blagoevgrad town
The names of the pimps, kidnapped Natalia in Blagoevgrad are known by the police.
“We have been detained them many times. All of them have pendent cases. We are continuing working on the case of this group.”, a policeman from the police-station in Blagoevgrad reveals.
4-5 pimp bands are dealing with traffic of white slaves in the region. Most of them are working in cooperation with Albanian, Macedonian and Italian partners. The recidivists have connections between the criminal contingent and they are providing fresh flesh to be exported. Young and attractive boys for 50-60 leva per night win over young girls in the disco clubs. Afterwards they drove them to Italy with fraudulent job offers for cleaning ladies and waitresses. For this service the recidivists pay them 200 – 500 EURO. Most of the pimps from Blagoevgrad spend their time in the State of the boot.
“There are people, who hold up to 20-30 prostitutes. They win hundreds thousands of EURO per month. They bring back the money in Bulgaria where they laundry them”, a source from Ministry of Internal Affairs claims. “They invest the money in cars, big shops and building. The official version and explanation of their wealth in most of the cases is that they are dealing with trade with cars and spare auto parts.”
Most of the pimps from Blagoevgrad start to leap to the eye for about a year ago. They ostentatious show a parade of his body guards – six in number and the train of luxury limousines. “The most powerful group for traffic of girls in Blagoevgrad region is leaded by Ventzeslav – The Mouse.”, an employee from the police-station reveals.
The Mouse had been investigated for theft, thrashing and hooliganism. His people import cars from Italy and Germany. Behind the “window-dressing” of the limousines they trade with flesh. On July 8, this year so far The Mouse is under a police investigation. He and his band are suspected for the kidnapping of Vlado Tipoto, a boss of an auto market.
An operative data from The Ministry of Internal Affairs show the boss had hidden in Italy.
Don Bentzi: The story of the
Bulgarian girl moved me deeply
Don Oreste Bentzi is one of the most influential Italian ecclesiastics devoted his life to the salvation of the girls. He is a president of “Pope Yoan XXIII” foundation that has offices in 27 states around the world.
“The story of Natalia moved me deeply and personally concussed me. That is why we helped her to meet the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berluskoni.”, Don Bentzi recalls. According to his words the pimps had forced the girl to prostitute even when she was in the seventh month of her pregnancy. They’ve tortured her. When she was saved she was deprived of faith and has been through hell.
“We’ve helped a lot of girls from Bulgaria. At the moment we take care of five of your girls. They also have been turned into white slaves. All of them have dramatic destinies. They are victims of an inhuman violence. We are giving them a chance to start their lives from the beginning.”, Don Betzi says.
His organization has saved more than 4500 white slaves. The girls live on a safe place, in communes. Pimps had made attempts to introduce into the protective organizations girls to spy for them, but Bentzi’s assistants have recovered them. “Pope Yoan XXIII” cooperates with the police.
Berluskoni’s assistance
The cheque for 2600 EURO Silvio Berluskoni gives to the Bulgarian prostitute Natalia, excited everyone in Italy and provoked a huge public discussion.
Livia Turko - a lawmaker from the Democrats from the Left Party declares that she is chocked by this cynical exhibitionism of money. Instead such a charity deed Berluskoni should engage his government into concrete measures for fight with the prostitution. The destiny of our girl and the one of the other Albanian prostitute, introduced to the Italian Prime Minister by “Pope Yoan XXIII” foundation move to tears Berluskoni. He gave them money and encouraged them to start a new life.
Alesandra Mussolini a deputy from the Right National Union, grand daughter of Mussolini, defends the Prime Minister with the argument he is the first one who brings the problem with the prostitution to the public’s attention in Italy.
