St. John's Mission Seminary, Changanacherry

St. John’s Mission Seminary Changanacherry, Kerala, was started in 1962 for the PUC/ PDC/+2 students.  Fr. V. Zimmerman who pioneered vocation promotion in South India was the one who was entrusted with the task of establishing the house.  He, with the help of Frs. Joseph Puthumana and Sebastian Potanany and Frt. Augustine Chellenthara were the initial men who laid the foundation of the seminary.  In 1966, Fr. Raphael Cheenath (now Archbishop of Bhubaneswar) was appointed Rector followed by Fr. Joseph Madathany, George Muthanattu etc. as rectors.

A total of 965 students have been admitted to this house over the last 40 years and of these 122 were ordained priests and about a hundred are in various stages of formation.  The seminary has contributed much in forming zealous, committed and active SVD missionaries to work all over the world.  At present we have 30 students in this seminary.  Bishop Chacko Thottumarickal of Jhabua Diocese was a student of St. John’s between the years 1964-66.

Divine Ministries

The confreres besides the formation and teaching works in the seminary and vocation promotion for the society are also involved in pastoral work in the nearby parishes and convents as and when needed and convenient.  We also keep in touch with the families of the confreres working in the missions.  Since the last five years Fr. Babu Kakkaniyil was the director of the vocation promotion and animation and coordination of various dioceses and congregations in Kerala under the auspices of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference.
