Summer 2004
Silicon Valley Young Republican Federation
Time Again for Another Barbecue
It is that time of the year again, time for the SVYRFC All American Barbecue and Picnic. There was no doubt last years event was a great success, with over 100 people in attendance. The SVYRFC raised over $2100, which went to charities such as a 9/11 victims fund and also to local college Republican clubs all over the Bay Area. This year’s sponsors list include the UC Santa Cruz College Republicans, UCSB College Republicans, the Stanford Review, UC Irvine College Republicans and the UC Irvine Review. Last but not least the hard working students of the CSU Hayward College Republicans. Along with club treasurer Theri Rowen, and director at large Danny Dailey who have agreed to serve as co-chairs of the event will be Jennifer and Carlos Zapata who will coordinate cooking and clean up.
This year the venue for the event has changed to Ed Levin Park in Milpitas, but we will still plan to have live entertainment and raffle to raise funds. The date of this year’s Barbecue and Picnic is August 21 from 3 to 7pm.
Tickets will go on sale on June 10. Prices will be the following: $20.00 a person, $30 a couple and $ 5.00 for CR's and YRFC members. Ticket prices will go up $5 if purchased at the door. Raffle tickets will be $2.00 each. We have invited CRP State Vice Chair Mario Rodriguez, and also numerous local candidates and numerous local candidates and campaign representatives. Expect a live band to rock the vote and many republicans from all over the state. For more information contact 408 243-4761 or email us at svyreps@yahoo.com
SVYRFC March Primary Successes & Successful Hospitality Suite
The March 2004 primary is over and the agenda for Silicon Valley Republicans is now to get ready to defeat the Evil Democrats. The SVYRFC was faced with the job of supplying funds and volunteers for our endorsed primary candidates. Work almost single handled on a state party convention suite and help the CRP make the spring convention in Burlingame a success and in some cases some of our club members had to be candidates run against the party establishment.
In the case of the suite for Spring CRP convention we did receive help from the Kern County YR’S, UC Santa Cruz College Republicans, the Whittier College Republicans, and the state board of the YRFC.
There were also in attendance at the event, State Senator Roy Ashburn, State Senator Dennis Hollingsworth, State Assemblyman Doug la Malfa, former CRP state chair Shawn Steel, Contra Costa chair Tom del Baccaro, congressional candidates Chris Huskins, the lovely Claudia Bermudez, Mike Dugas, and Chris Haugen along with numerous dignitaries from all over the state.
Overall success for the event should be laid on club treasurer Theri Rowen, associate member Tom Askeland and numerous SVYRFC members such as Alan Hall, who devoted to make the suite a success.
The March primary was a mixed bag of defeats and successes, SVYRFC members Ed Rowen, Keen Butcher, Amelia Diaz, Jennifer Zapata and associate member Tom Askeland were all elected to their local party committees and Miss Jennifer Zapata was elected to be a delegate to the Republican national convention in New York City. The bad news were the defeats of Dennis Rowen, Theri Rowen, for the Santa Clara Central Committee and Chris Huskins for the congressional primary in the 12th district all the defeats were disappointments and we wish these folks well in the future.
Lastly club member Shane Connolly should receive politician of the year award for his 80 percent victory in his primary for state senate and we wish him the best of luck in November as we wish all GOP candidates who will be on the fall ballot in the Silicon Valley.

President’s Message
By Ed Rowen
W
ell, it’s time of the year again; we are past the Primaries and it is time for November. It’s time to walk precincts and register voters and fight the Democrats and the Liberals. This year is more important than most because it is a presidential year and we are supposed to re-elect President Bush and help the entire statewide GOP ticket. That is what our job is and organizing cocktail parties and other stuff shrinks to being unimportant.Yet some folks forget the message and spend time fighting each other and spreading rumors. The bad news for us is that many of these folks are in the Silicon Valley. They come out of hiding to talk about their disgust with George W Bush and the GOP from everything to abortions all the way to the fact he likes steak sauce on his hamburger. There are times I wish these people would go away or just do us all a favor and change parties.
Our job is to elect Republicans and spend our time at the local malls or walking precincts. I might disagree with some GOP candidates over some issues, but I will do my damnedest to get them elected. As local Republicans this should be our creed beyond anything else. If we cannot understand that simple fact then we should become Democrats or join some other political party or just lock yourself in your room and watch Friends re-runs. One last note, club vice president Jay Kirkman will be leaving the area at the end of June. Jay was an outstanding vice president and was a great to have him involved in SVYRFC.
Also leaving the area is former UC Santa Cruz College Republican president Laurie Hauf. Laurie just graduated from UC Santa Cruz and will either be moving back to San Diego or going to law school on the East Coast. Under her leadership the group became one of the biggest college Republican clubs in California. She helped with both the SVYRFC BBQ and the suite at the convention. She is another great example of what a Republican can be and she will be missed.

"The Shadow"
(For Reasons Unknown The Shadow Would Prefer to be Anonymous...)
C
ampaign 2004: The story continues….Campaign 2004 is no summer stage with the parties and Nominees ready to head into the fall. We have Bush VS Kerry, Jones VS Boxer, Pyle VS De La Rosa, Konnyu VS Cohn, and Poizner VS Ruskin as matchups the rest will come on and smell the coffee the Democrat Nominees will be re-elected with lopsided landlines even if they run with their clothes off in the middle of Downtown San Jose. Of course the only other race worth watching will be race to succeed State Senator Bruce McPherson and we expect that Abel will win that seat by a landslide.
On the local scene we expect Local YR George Doorley to run for Campbell city council and win along with Republican Mike Rodriguez who should have won a seat on the Santa Clara council if GOP Politico and Famous transvestite Tom Campbell had not campaigned hard for the Democrat. To me and to others the local GOP has very few opportunities to gain even with two open State Assembly seats and an open State Senate seat. Years of local GOP stupidity and money form political whores in Silicon Valley have led the Santa Clara county Republican Party a political joke. Even some of the so-called sacrificial lambs that are running against democrats such as Sally Lieber are even more liberal than they are and in some cases should be locked with Iraqi POWs. We hope that the new Central Committee will do a better job and make the Republican Party in the Silicon Valley competitive again.

From Hollister to the "Big Apple"
by Jennifer Zapata
My humble beginnings as a grassroots volunteer began as a precinct walker and envelope stuffer for the Jeff Denham for Assembly Campaign in the 2000 election. Four years later, I am honored and ecstatic to be one of 343 grassroots volunteers who will be representing California at the Republican National Convention in New York City this summer.
The selection process for the California Delegation was unique. Unlike other states, California used an online application process that was open to all Republican activists. Over 2100 people applied for 340 positions (Note: the CRP Chairman, National Committeewoman, and National Committee Man fill the 3 other slots.) Shortly after New Year's I spent several nights on the computer filling out the extensive 11-page application, making sure I listed every GOP volunteer position I had ever held as well as describing my non-political community activities, such as being in the community chorale. When the application asked for "any other information that we should know about," I wrote about running the Big Sur Marathon with my husband, which I felt was an example of perseverance and dedication to a task.
Governor Schwarzenegger, who now serves as the Honorary Chairman of our delegation, was on the Selection Committee as was Congressman David Dreier and our Delegation Chairman Gerald Parsky. The California Delegation is the largest in the country and is quite diverse, consisting of 53% women and over 36% minorities. Our first meeting all together, which took place on May 8, was televised on C-Span as part of the show "Road to the White House."
Each delegate is allowed one guest, who must also successfully pass a 9-page application process. My husband Carlos will be my guest, and we look forward to our first trip to New York. My uncle, a former financial reporter for the New York Times, will meet us there a few days early to show us the sights as we will very busy once the convention starts! The culmination of everything will, of course, be when we nominate our steadfast President George W. Bush as our choice for November. Wish you all could be there, too!

ALAN J. HALL
Quote-
"A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend upon the support of Paul."
(Attributed to George Bernard Shaw)
Political hero - Ronald Reagan *
A most significant person in my generation, he fought for conservative values even when he didn't have Congress on his side and yet accomplished much, particularly with a strong commitment to national security that led to the eventual crumbling of the Iron Curtain and the downfall of the Soviet Union. Honorable mentions to Alan Keyes and Ron Paul.
Why I am a Conservative -
Civil rights of the individual are paramount. When Martin Luther King Jr. said, "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character," the Republicans have by far upheld that goal while the actions far left support the opposite. The far left likes to categorize people into different groups with divide and conquer tactics, spend ridiculous amounts of money on failed social programs, and destroy the sanctity of the family and mock values.
We need to get this nation back to favoring smaller government, less confiscation of our hard-earned income and the repeal of the 16th amendment, an overturn of Roe vs. Wade, a recommitment to the right of self defense as well as a strong national defense, vital for our future in this hostile world we live in.
~ Alan
* Since I initially wrote my piece on President Reagan, we shared the experience of his passing and a reminder of the positive impact he had on this nation and also of the world. One paragraph cannot even begin to tap into the accomplishments of our beloved 40th President.

THE FLASH? Didn't this quarterly used to be called something else? Good eye. Say "goodbye" to THE NEXT GENERATION…it was sooooooo last generation. Say hello to THE FLASH.
Also note we now have a new Silicon Valley YRFC logo that replaces the county outline with a more apt design for Silicon Valley. You'll also note that our website has been overhauled and now is updated more frequently. We hope you enjoy the changes. |
The Privilege to Privacy
By Kyle Redding
Jack Ryan should be a U.S. Senator. The Prairie State Republican dropped out of the Illinois Senate race for personal reasons. The personal reasons? Four years ago he and his ex-wife Jeri Lynn (whom you may know as Jeri Ryan from Star Trek: Voyager and Boston Public) divorced. The Chicago Tribune sued Ryan for the release of the court records concerning the divorce and the custody of their son, Alex. Both Ryan and Lynn wanted to keep the records private, for the sake of their son and the family’s privacy.
Why did the Tribune want the records? To sell papers, course. According to the court records, Lynn accused Ryan of taking her to sex clubs and pressuring her to have sex with him in public. Ryan denies these accusations to this day, but the Tribune venomously splashed their front pages with sensationalized accounts of what was said in court. Scandal sells newspapers.
It’s understandable that Ryan and Lynn would want these records kept in private. They are - well - private. But the judge in the case ruled that Ryan and Lynn had to turn over the records to the Tribune.
The Tribune’s agenda is pretty clear here. Disgrace Ryan, thereby ruining his reputation and his political career, and turn a profit to boot. A judge ruling in a suit that a newspaper has the rights to a private citizen’s court records is a mockery of justice. That a newspaper would sue a private citizen for those records is a travesty of decency.
Why should the "he-said/she-said" goings-on in a divorce be a campaign issue? Why should a candidate’s family matters be battered around as media fodder? At least two blameless people, Lynn and Alex, were hurt during this ordeal. But don’t expect remorse from the Tribune. The press is in the business of making people miserable.
And since when has the media been so concerned about a person’s private life? After all, it’s "just sex." And speaking of the Clinton Impeachment, the press paraded about as proud defenders of the so-called faith. And unlike with Clinton, there were no accusations of perjury or obstruction in Ryan’s case and no investigation of any kind to begin with. Could it be that Ryan’s a - gasp! - Republican, the print media’s sworn mortal enemy? Their sanctimonious obsession with Ryan’s sins seems to be greater than Sauron’s for the ring.
By the way, the Tribune has thus far has not sued John Kerry for the release of his divorce records.
But such behavior from the press has become expected. The real danger here in Judge Schnider’s decision. It is probably the most outrageous decision in recent history to come from a judge who doesn’t sit on the Ninth Circuit. The impact of decision, along with the precedent set, is that our government will order us to turn over our private records - court, medical, otherwise - to anyone who can put up the money to sue us. The Tribune’s senseless desire to sell papers at the expense of Ryan’s political career, thanks to a single judge, may have cost us all dearly.
The government’s newfound power to trample upon yet another of our sacred rights is Orwellian politics at its finest, and must be opposed. The ACLU deserves some credit for siding with Limbaugh in Florida concerning his medical records. However, they should have jumped to the occasion with Ryan rather than wasting time fighting the cross formerly seen on Los Angeles’ County Seal. Perhaps they feel that Christianity is a greater threat to our freedom than meddlesome judges.
Ryan should be a Senator now more than ever. Not only is his experience this summer more evidence that Conservatives are right when it comes to choosing judicial nominees, but proof that our government needs someone who understands first-hand the importance of privacy rights and who will fight to protect those rights.
When our government thinks that our rights are not rights at all, but privileges, it’s time for change. It’s time for us to remind them that it’s we who grant the government privileges, not the other way around.
