"Nightmare on Draft night" Houston. Chicago. Golden State. Memphis. Denver. Cleveland. There's a reason why these teams are always in the lottery. They make horrible decisions on draft day. Even when the best player falls into their laps they pass on him for a stiff. Teams never seem to learn that a rim rocker doesn't mean championships(see Toronto). A complete player helps a team more than an athlete. Yet teams still take the athlete with potential than the complete player. This year, Caron Butler was that complete player who fell. In past years it was Paul Pierce in 98 and Rip Hamilton in 99. Guys who should have went higher, but due to "questions" they slipped. Houston didn't follow this school of thought, but they did botch the first pick. They desperately needed a SF, and the best player in the draft happened to be able to play SF, but they take a soft center with the first pick. Then Chicago came up, they needed another wing player since Jalen Rose is the only other wing player who could make another NBA team. They decided to take a SG in college and try to make him a PG, I'm not saying that he doesn't deserve a shot, but Butler was the better player and the safer pick. Then comes Golden State, I could write an entire article about how they completely bombed on draft night, but now I am writing about Butler so this will have to do. The thought that Dunleavy is better than Butler is laughable. He's another softee who's only advantage over Butler is shooting, and not by that much. He can't guard a soul, not a rebounder, and isn't a great ball handler. And they use the #3 pick on him. Ridiculous. No wonder their roster is full of useless players, it's moves like these. I'm shocked that St. Jean still has his job. Memphis is next. Jerry West was a mystery. I thought Butler would go here because West is usually a master of deception. But this year he used a different approach and talked about the guy he was taking. But here's the problem with his pick: Drew Gooden may be a great player, but he plays the same position as their best player, Pau Gasol. They needed a wing player to play with Shane Battier. Butler was the perfect fit. If Gooden could play center, then the pick would have made more sense. Now on to Denver, again I could rant all over these guys. Don't you think they would learn from 98? Again they pass over the best player in the draft for a soft PF. First Pierce, now Butler, they really missed the mark there. And then, they could have had New York choose Butler for them, and they passed it up.Morons.I am never platter. Denver basically said," Here take the best player in the draft, we're not gonna be good before his first contract is up, so we might as well take a guy who may not develop until we are good." All those teams made a huge mistake. New York, the Clippers and Phoenix had not need for Butler, so I can't rant about them. However, all these teams will pay each time they play Miami, and Butler will just think, "They took that shocked that they don't make the playoffs. Cleveland, they should have picked Butler at 6, they still would have gotten Wagner, because they Clips would have taken Wagner over Wilcox. There would have been no problem, and they would have gotten Odom. So they get some points for trying to snag Butler in a deal, but they still should have taken him at 6. He was handed to them on a silver guy over me? Sees what they know". The Q |
