Himalayan Institute Swami Rama founded several independent organizations bearing the name Himalayan Institute. The first of these was in Kanpur, India, formed in the early 1960's. This original Himalayan Institute remains active in India, mostly in Kanpur and Delhi. Other organizations bearing the name Himalayan Institute were later founded in other countries in Asia, Europe, North America, and South America, beginning in the 1970's. Some of these institutions continue today, while others no longer exist. The Himalayan Institute that is most well known is the Himalayan Institute of the USA. The USA Institute has started to form branches of it's organization in India, beginning after Swami Rama left the body in 1996 (not affiliated with the original Himalayan Institute that formed in Kanpur). The Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust, Himalayan Institute of Medical Science, and Swami Rama Center continue to grow, and are having a major impact in serving the people of the Uttaranchal region of northern India. Included in the programs are training in holistic health, hatha yoga, and meditation. Several other organizations and institutions have been born as a result of the activities of the various Himalayan Institute organizations and their people, where students of Swami Rama have started their own teaching institutions.
