View looking South from behind the Union lines at Pittsburg Landing. The Rebels are massing for one last great assault. Already the Confederate troops have pushed Federal units back from the "Hornets Nest". CSA gunboats have driven Union naval forces down river. Major Genl Braxton Bragg orders Chalmers and Jackson to send the remnants of the 1st and 2nd Brigades over the Dill Branch. The 3rd Brigade reinforces the attack and the wounded tinclad persimmon steam down stream to assist. |
View looking west from the Tennessee River toward CSA battle lines South of Dill Branch creek. Persimmon left to support the attack and crew works feverishly to repair damage form the morning's engagement of ironclads. |
Meanwhile Pittsburg Landing is quiet while U.S.Grant makes dispositions of his jumbled troops from the day's fight and units lick their wounds. |
Hard fighting by 7PM has decimated the 8th Ohio and 1st Minn Batteries in cross-fire from tinclad and infantry assaults, but not before the Minnisotans inflict enough damage on the Persimmon's already battered hull to force her down river before she sinks. The 54th Ohio Zouves supporting the guns held the attack by the 2nd Texas and drove them off in hand to hand melee(foreground). |
By 8:00 PM the first Rebel attack on the center is repulsed by vicious final defensive fire and first fire volleys of Union muskettry., but not before the 5th Miss overruns the 2nd Ill Battery. Grant and Buell are rushing reserves to plug holes to hold the Center and Left. It looks like they will hold! The Rebs are streaming away from the fight. The brave 55th Ill have repulsed the last of three charges by the 1st AL Cavalry. They are then isolated and decimated by advancing CSA infantry fire from both flanks. |
By 8:40 PM as darkness falls the second wave 52nd TN, 9th MS, and 10th MS charges on the Federal center and throws back the Union 2nd Ill A Battery capturing the guns, the 11th Iowa, and 14th Ill. The Union Left is also turned as CSA regiments enter Pittsburg Landing into the abandoned camp. The Rebs are exhausted taking 2310 casualties to the Union's 1740 and 10 sections of Arty. The US forces will fall back down river to Savannah, TN undercover of new naval reinforcement from Ft Henry. This was a minor CSA victory since the Union retired in good order as darkness fell. |
