Tanunda, Barossa Valley, South Australia Tanunda is situated about 75 km East of Adelaide and is within the beautiful Barossa Valley. Our most recent visit was April 2001 and the average temp then was 22C. We stayed at the Tanunda Caravan Park.
Lutherans fleeing religious persecution in the 1800's settled the area - planting vines they had brought out from their homelands. Traditions still are found in the Valley and leiberwurst and other German delicacies are abundant in Tanunda and other towns throughout the Valley. The Langmeil Church is reached through a 100m walkway of cypress trees. There are a number of Lutheran churches in the township and the Tabor Lutheran church's spire has an orb containing church records.
The Vintage Festival is held every 2 years and one of the newer "traditions" to evolve is that of scarecrows being made and placed throughout the Valley.
The Zeigenmarkt (Goat Square) remains as a reminder of the first common and is ringed with historic cottages. The post and telegraph offices were saved from demolition and are now museums. We were very fortunate when we visited and the Tanunda Caravan Park were hosting a "Music Hall" concert. We were entertained by Irish Albert and his company, along with Claire Leahy and her Music Hall ensemble. Sandi McMenamin also entertained us with her songs and keyboard skills.
The Caravan Park also put on other entertainment weekends throughout the year, covering country & western, rock n' roll and also jazz. This particular concert went from midday to 8pm on the Saturday and Sunday we were there. (Visit Sandi McMenamin's homepage from my Links page) |
