Christmas Mix (Garlic Mix, or Chex® Mix)

This recipe is passed on through my Aunt’s family.

It is a holiday must.

Compare our recipe to Chex®'s at www.chex.com - their's is not very garlicy!

OVEN
Preheat oven to 225°

PAN
You'll need a large lobster pot for one batch

Ingredients:

Garlic Powder

DRY INGREDIENTS
4 cups of each: Cheerios,
Rice Chex® and Wheat Chex® cereals,
and Pretzels - any shape
1 1/2 Cup mixed nuts
1 can of peanuts
1 jar each of sunflower seeds
and wheat nuts (optional)

SAUCE
1 Lb. of butter
8 to 12 cloves of crushed garlic
(crush into pan)
2 Tblsp. Worchester Sauce
1/2 Tsp. seasoned salt

FLAVOR NOTES:
For alterations in recipe, please note that adding more cereal will absorb more sauce and taste less flavorful.

Be aware of how many products contain salt already. The seasoned salt adds flavor and more salt. The peanuts may come salted or unsalted. The pretzels have salt. The garlic powder has no salt, but GARLIC SALT is NOT recommended because it makes the mix incredibly salty with all the other salt sources in this recipe.

It is OK to double the recipe but stagger and alternate oven racks that the two lobster pots bake on, and increase the bake time 15 to 30 minutes.

Recipe:

In a large saucepan, melt the butter and add the Worchester Sauce, seasoned salt, and crush all the cloves of garlic into the butter mixture. Bring to a low boil, reduce heat and simmer until mixture is dark and thickens slightly, approximately 10 minutes.

Fill lobster pot with the dry ingredients. Pour sauce mixture over dry ingredients a cupful at a time. Mix up well as you add the sauce, stirring frequently BUT GENTLY. The cereals will break up into little pieces if you are not gentle.

Bake for 1 hour, mixing well every 15 minutes and sprinkle with garlic powder at these 15 minute intervals. Finished baking when the butter sauce is more baked in and less glistening shiny. Let cool completely for several hours.

Store in air tight plastic containers. The left over peanut jars and cans come in handy for this as well. Can also be frozen for approximately 6 months. Will thaw and still be crunchy.
