12/7 - Entertainment Tonight Interview with Angelina Jolie |
MARK STEINES chatted with ANGELINA about "raiding tombs," being a bad-ass, and why she and BILLY BOB are stranger than people think! Read on! MARK STEINES: Behind you, people are seeing this awesome shot. Tell me what this is. Where are we? ANGELINA JOLIE: Good question. In the film, this is inside Angkor Wat. It's a temple. Mark: Which is in Cambodia. Which is where you just came back from. How was that? Angelina: Very calm. You can't yell there at all. I've never loved a place so much. We were all yelling the first few days. My truck wasn't there. You couldn't get guns in there and this and this. And then a few hours into it there is this scene with the monks. We all were blessed and after that we became the most relaxed film crew. Mark: How long was the whole visit altogether? Angelina: We were there for ten days filming. Mark: You're so adventurous. Tell me the story -- you're on a log or something? Angelina: On that. (Points to a log suspended in air) The people who built this set, it's just amazing. Every different thing comes alive. It's very much like the game, the puzzles in it. You walk in and something falls through something. And something comes together. If you look at one corner of this set, something will shift and become something else. This log up here, I actually have to get on it and have to surf it across and have to break through something. And Billy said I looked like I was riding a bull. Mark: Now, that is I'm guessing, about fifty feet up? Fearless. Doing your own stunts over here I hear. Angelina: I've done a lot of them, yeah, but I also have some great girls that are doing a bunch as well. Mark: I've heard dad (JON VOIGHT) isn't too happy with you doing (your own stunts)? Angelina: Yeah, dad does his own stunts as well so dad can't say much. I saw dad on a train in Mission: Impossible. So, dad's just as wacky. Mark: So, is that where you get it from? Angelina: I don't know. I've had months to train and I learned so many different skills. At the beginning, I thought, "I don't want to be in this." The pressure.... Then after a while you learn how to sword fight, and I shot a shotgun and an automatic and the shells went down my shirt. I went home thinking, "I can't." Now, I can reload them, flip them. Mark: Billy Bob must be horrified that you are over here swinging from logs. You're a brand new wife and he barely has any time to spend with you. Does he not call and go, "No Honey, get that stunt double in there." Angelina: He's the most supportive person around me. He thinks that if anybody can do it, I can. He knows I'm crazy. The fact that I'm up on a log saving the world is hysterical to him. Mark: So much so he came over here. You got him on a plane. Angelina: I miss him so much. Mark: I'll say this, it's so incredible to see what you guys have. We were talking about this last night. There are people that go an entire lifetime who never experience the kind of passion you two feel for each other. This is so awesome and inspiring. Angelina: He's made it possible, it's like this film. She's such an adventurer, and so free and so strong and so many things I couldn't be until I met him. I'm so happy to live and I'm so alive and I'm so full of him that I'm able to do those things. Mark: You pick up the paper and, fair or not, there are people who are like, "Oh, it won't last." Angelina: Of course they're going to say that about us, we are two of the strangest.... We even find it funny because we were talking about it the other day and he said, "You never thought you'd hear this, but you're my wrong." The two of us being each other's, and the fact that I'm someone's stability is hysterical. And the fact that he is my center, he is what's normal, he's what grounds me. Of course people say things, because we are the only two people in the world who could've found what they found. Together we're strange. We are really strange. And it makes it great. It doesn't hurt us. Mark: Maybe some are envious or jealous? Angelina: I hated people like us. All my life, I'd see people laughing and giggling and up all night eating cereal and I thought, "Oooh!" And I've become one of those people. Mark: One thing that celebrities are doing are starting their own Web sites to expel any rumors. Ever entertain those thoughts? Angelina: No, because most of the rumors about me are true, The strange thing is we read things about us being strange and they aren't even close to as strange as we really are. They'll go, "Ooh, they got this in their house and we'll go, that's not what we have -- if they really knew!" Let them think that. That's fine. I don't think people are that different from us. They are more strange than what they'll admit to. And we've just ... we're free. Mark: You're so candid, which is so refreshing. It's nice to sit with someone who doesn't have everything hidden and you think you are going to step on a landmine. When will you guys work together? Angelina: We've decided that after I finish this film, the next film I'm doing somehow we'll take and we will do something. We just can't be apart like this ever again. I just can't take it. I'm getting weird. Mark: If you could do a movie with him what would you want? Angelina: It would be funny -- we could do anything, we'd be good enemies. Mark: Tell me about Lara Croft. Bringing this person to life. Angelina: I love being this character. I love meeting kids who have been to this set and they've given me the okay. There is something about her, she doesn't hate, she's not this strong woman that hates men. She just likes to have fun, she's open to everything. She's not a reluctant hero, she's not trapped in the danger. She's having fun, and she is a little crazy. Mark: Was your dad up for it? Did you ask him to be in this? Angelina: Yeah, we talked about it for a long time who should be my father and it dawned on us. It was actually a big thing to ask my dad because we've never worked with each other and never thought we would. I think what happened was this film, the relationship with the father is very much like my relationship with my father. It's very close to home and in the end, my life is not dissimilar from hers (Lara Croft's). They are both adventurers and they find each other on an adventure, and Jon and I are both actors?. Mark: Did you see him as dad? Angelina: I saw him as one of my best friends who was playing dress-up with me, and we were both in the world we love so much together and it was great. We were saying things that we've always wanted to say to each other. Mark: I read that you were hurt doing a stunt. Angelina: Which injury? I burnt my leg while I was standing on a chandelier. I ripped, a little rip, in the ligament in my ankle. And I had a cane which we were making fun of. Oh look, Lara Croft with a cane. But I had physical therapy. Mark: Does something like that lend to the image that you are kinda some bad-ass chick, that you really claim you're not? Angelina: I think it's just bizarre to me that people think I'm a bad ass. To me, they are very normal things. My tattoos say something that is very sacred to me and romantic even. You can almost say it's corny. Mark: I like the TENNESSEE WILLIAMS one. Is that still true today? Angelina: A prayer for the wild of heart kept in a cage? Yeah, it's my prayer for everybody. I wish we lived in a world where everybody could be completely who they were. Just be open and happy, not feel judged. Mark: You're in great shape and I read that you're eating differently now and not smoking and have cut back on alcohol and coffee. Angelina: I'm not allowed to do anything. It's been great. Mark: Will you stay on that diet once the movie is over? Angelina: I actually, I don't smoke. I drink occasionally but hardly at all. But yeah, Billy stopped smoking, we both don't smoke anymore. Makes me happy because we are both going to be healthy. We both eat pretty healthy because we both want to be strong -- we want to take life on. I think we both think we can let life eat at us and we could hide and get really dark and self-destructive, certainly I can, or I can step up and embrace it all and take life in and I've chosen to do that and this character has helped me. Mark: Holiday plans? Angelina: Get home. I want to be in bed with him. |
