In 1967, 19-year-old Susanna (Winona Ryder) feels that "reality is becoming too dense" and is diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. She commits herself to a mental hospital and spends the next 18 months struggling with her troubled psyche and the bizarre world of the hospital. Susanna bonds with several other patients, including Lisa (Angelina Jolie), Polly (Elizabeth Moss), and Georgia (Clea DuVall). As she realizes that Lisa is potentially dangerous and truly needs help, Susanna begins to work harder with her psychiatrist (Vanessa Redgrave) and the nurse on the ward (Whoopi Goldberg). But Susanna soon learns that getting out of the hospital is not as easy as getting in. This is the movie in which Angelina was critically acclaimed. She won the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, and the OSCAR for her portrayal as Lisa Rowe.
This was such a great movie. I knew the second I finished this movie, I would be an Angelina Jolie fan for life. I hate to say it but I saw GI before Gia, so I didn't know how talented she really was. I had seen her in Hackers and Playing By Heart. But after I watched GI the third time around, I bought Gia. I thought the ending of this movie was so powerful, but I don't want to give it away to those who haven't seen it. She plays an honest-to-a-fault sociopath. She may be cruel in some aspects but you can't help loving her for the energy that she exudes. She was called "Jack Nicholson in drag." You can't help but love Lisa's attitude. Right after filming this movie, Angelina got the "A prayer for the wild at heart, kept in cages" tattoo with her mother. I just respect how honest Angelina is and that's probably why I thought that Lisa was one of the best movie characters in history. It's good to go a little crazy sometimes.
