Scene Summaries Scene 1 In the beginning Artemidorus and Decius are urging for Caesar to read a petition. Soon after Cassius tells Caesar he has to go to the Capitol. When Caesar goes he goes with all of the conspirators around him. When Caesar saw soothsayer he told him that the ides of March have come. Later in the Senate’s House Caesar sits down and lets Metellus talk. Metellus then gets down at Caesar’s feet and beg him to release his brother from exclusion. After Mettellus begged Brutus begs also and Cassius then jumps in on pleading him for Cimber’s release. Cinna, Decius, Ligarius, and Casca are all kneeling before Caesar; Casca says “Speak hands for me and then they all stab Caesar. Before Caesar falls he says “Et tu, Brute? Then fall, Caesar. Cinna is extremely happy and the way Cinna expresses this is by shouting out, “Liberty! Freedom! Tranny is dead! Antony goes up to Brutus and starts asking why did Caesar have to die; Antony wasn’t very pleased with Caesar’s death. Brutus tells Antony that Caesar was destroying the republic and he had to be eliminated. Antony shakes all of the murderer’s hands and asks Brutus permission to make a speech at Caesar’s funeral. Brutus accepts with the condition of him saying only positive things about them. Antony was left alone with Caesar’s body and as he stayed there looking at it he spoke to it saying sorry for being gentle with the ones who killed him. Shortly after talking to Caesar’s body the servant for Octavius walked in. Antony asked him, “you serve Octavius Caesar, do you not? the servant responded with yes and after a short conversation he said, “And bid me say to you by word of mouth- O Caesar! Together they carry out Caesar’s body. Scene 2 The plebeians, members of the lower class, ask to get an explanation. Brutus said he would give an explanation to whom ever wanted to hear it. Some left with Cassius and some stayed to listen to Brutus. One of the plebeians wanted to hear Cassius explanation and then Brutus’s explanation to compare them to see if they are similar. Brutus told the group he was speaking to that he loved Caesar, but he loved Rome more so that’s why he killed him. He asked the crowd if they had wished to all live as slaves and die or to have Caesar dead and be living free. Brutus asked the crowd if they wanted him to kill himself for what he had done. The crowd shouted, “Live, Brutus! Live! Live! After Brutus’s speech came Antony’s. Antony told them that he went to bury Caesar not to praise him. “For Brutus is an honorable man, So are they all, all honorable men, he said. Antony mentioned various good things that Caesar said and after he would say something he would mention that yet Brutus was ambitious, and sure he is an honorable man. By all that was said by Antony, the plebeians become more convinced that Caesar was not ambitious and that he wasn’t murdered for the right reason. Antony told them about how he remembers the first time Caesar ever wore the mantle he had on. He described it so memorably. Antony reads them Caesar’s will which states that he has given every Roman citizen seventy-five drachmas. After giving a speech about Caesar the plebeians all turn against the people who murdered Caesar. Soon enough the servant comes to deliver news to Antony that Octavius is already in Rome and he is at Caesar’s house. Antony told the servant to take him to Octavius. Scene 3 Cinna the poet can’t sleep that night so Cinna wanders around the streets of Rome. Four plebeians find him and ask him for his name, where he is going, where does he sleep, and if he is a married man or a bachelor. He tells them that he is going to Caesar’s funeral butas a friend. When he tells them his name they say to get him, because he is a conspirator. Cinna tells them that he is a poet but they still take him away. I understood this by reading the number words that seemed kind of confusing. Also, I read slowly to try to comprehend as much as I could. If I didn’t understand a part I would ask my cousin if he knew what it meant and if he didn’t I read it over and over to get at least a close idea to what |
