The pictures on this page depict the Korean War Memorial that was erected in my hometown (Evansville, Indiana). The monument was put up downtown on the Riverfront Plaza overlooking the beautiful Ohio River. It was dedicated August 29, 1992. The money to build the monument came from the citizens of Evansville and the surrounding area. Fund raising efforts were spearheaded by veterans of the local Marine Reserve Unit, which was activated and served with the 1st Marine Division in Korea. You will notice in the background of picture #3, 4 columns which were erected nearby. they are called the 4 Freedoms Monument. It is dedicated to all 50 states. Each state has its own small monument placed in a circle around the columns, they have the state seal embedded in them. Ironically, these columns were salvaged and stored for many years, they came from a main building downtown that served as the USO during WW II. I thought it was quite appropriate to place the Korean War Memorial in the shadow of the 4 Freedoms Monument, as so many of this countries sons and daughters lost their lives defending those freedoms in Korea. I can remember, as a boy, going downtown to the USO building and shining shoes for the many soldiers that visited this city during WW II from Camp Breckenridge,Ky and Fort Knox, Ky and from Fort Campbell, Ky. The Korean War Memorial is situated in a beautiful Riverfront Park called Sunset Park. The Memorial serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by so many. Consequently, for those people who stroll down the Plaza or visit the park, the Korean War is no longer "The Forgotten War" |
